What did you do to your Ranger today? (Part Deux!)

lest 'ye all get confused, that's a side load bearing.
variations of it are used in many removable hub bearing units and other things.

Just an example. The parts/nomenclature are the same.

I ran the 4 AWG wire from the start battery back to existing holes in the bed, conveniently located right where I need them. I also installed the 50 amp circuit breaker the DC-DC MPPT charger called for. The wire is on the heavy side, but if I ever upgrade the charge later, the wiring will have the capacity to handle the increase amperage. I also will need to pick up some grommets for wire protection at the bed holes.

I still need to look at the wire diagrams to see where the ignition signal wire lives. Hopefully, there is a place not in the steering column that I can hook up to. Since the 2019 has a smart alternator that doesn't always put out 14+ volts, the DC-DC MPPT charger will not perform properly without the hook up to the ignition signal wire.

The battery boxes for the house batteries have been installed and the batteries are in place. They just need to be hooked up.

I also started some cardboard aided design for the layout of the inverter, the DC-DC MPPT, disconnect switches, circuit breakers, anderson connectors, and the meter to display power, voltage, etc. That way, I can have a pretty good idea how things will fit before I start cutting wood.

Pictures will be posted in the build thread. I expect to take some tomorrow. Running the 4 AWG was a chore. So, pictures were the last thing on my mind at the time.

Started the '99 and moved it over 10 foot to cut grass, probably the third time its been started this year. Sounded like I need to put the battery charger on it, but didn't happen. I really got to figure out what the future holds for it.

Reading this, I have a vague memory bouncing around in my noggin. I think it was one of the machinists when I was in Johnson and Johnson right out of school a 1000 years ago taught me this. Make a “pilot nut.“. Yeah, I never heard of it either and I’ve never heard of it since.

Basically, take a nut that’s a slightly smaller diameter and drill it and tap it. Use just slightly smaller drill bit than you’re supposed to, and then don’t tap it all the way. Use a pilot tap, and only run the pilot tap maybe halfway into the nut. That way you end up with a tapered thread, constricting as it goes over the bolt, and it grabs better on a bolt that has been thinned down.

That is pretty slick.

I'll use that for something one day.

I drove to my mountains yesterday to one of my go to places to look at the desert in San diego county. This county has changed in the four years I was gone..feels good to be back home in my own backyard, I will be moving out of state eventually.

Ordered a power steering pump for my '97 Ranger, it started leaking and working worse, piece of junk only lasted a quarter million miles , almost exactly, started leaking last week when it crossed 250k...

Cleaned and rerouted the crankshaft position sensor wiring. No improvement. I ended up back in town and the local junkyard had a coil pack and computer in stock, so I picked them up. Gonna try the coil pack first. Drive it a few days and go from there.
