What did you do to your Ranger today? (Part Deux!)

Man, I just want my junk done so I can go take part in some car shows
Well, all you have left is the part that isn't finished yet. You'll get it done.

If I could get stuff to stop breaking long enough to actually get things fixed I will get it done. Just did brakes on mom’s SUV all around, have to do front wheel bearings on dad’s Ranger, they are still after me to work on the Explorer so they can sell it, did half the front brakes and wheel bearings on the 150 because that’s all I had time for, engine swap and tranny work to the 92, and I have barely touched the 2000 all year because of that and work. Don’t get me started on the dump truck or choptop or 88…

Oh, and mustn’t forget the GFs car.

I went to a mopar nationals event yesterday, one of the things going on (besides all-day drag races, hundreds of classic mopars, a burnout contest) was a stunt show by a production group called “northeast ohio dukes”- with special guest stars tom wopat (luke) and catherine bach (daisy) . And of course, the cars. No cooters wrecker or uncle jesses truck (they have them, but taking this show on the road most of the way down ohio you cant bring everything). Great road trip, was about 75 miles for me, I really need to add cruise control to the ranger, was only $25 a ticket to get in.

Pulled the headliner and cleaned everything while it was out. Need to hit up the fabric shop now.

From yesterday:
Finished extending the RA’s and installed them. I used 24” long 2”x .25 wall DOM with .25” plate to box them in. They’re extended to the trans crossmember.
Don’t mind my pigsty, I was trying to hurry and didn’t care. I wanted to get the beams installed because I’m headed to work today and won’t be home for 3 weeks.

I did front brakes and wheel bearings. Glad I didn’t plan on repacking the old ones. Had to use my modified puller tool to get the old disc off. The spindle, or whatever it’s called, feels fine but I guess we’ll see.

Wow... Looks like it was over torqued or under greased or both.

At least you cought it before it destroyed the spindle completely.

Personally, I would heavily consider a new spindle. Where the outer bearing sits, there is evidence of a lot of heat. It also looks like the bearing race may have spun on the spindle and messed up the surface finish.

I went and pulled the 4.0 out of what's left of the first doner explorer. Got it home and on a stand, now I just need to tear it down, sounds like work for next week though😉. Still haven't fully committed to the route I'm going to go with it however, I'm just waiting to see what the internals look like. Can't really swing a pro rebuild and the other things still needed though, ugh it sycks when you make decent money and are still broke-ish lol.

+1 on this. That spindle is going to be nothing but trouble if it’s let go.

I saw no mention of replacing the rotors. I hope you plan on changing them as well as the spindle that’s messed up. I know it’s more cost but with what happened to the bearings, the rotor and spindle are going to be damaged.

Thanks all. I didn’t feel any ridges on the spindle but it looks like it’s on the list now. I put in new bearings, rotors, calipers, and pads. I didn’t trust anything down there. I only replaced the right shock cause the left shock mounting bolt sheared off. Pretty sure it’ll need a new control arm. I’ll probably do all the suspension related bushings as well.

I dunno, it does look like it got cooked and maybe spun the race but the spindles can take a crap ton of heat without harm. If the new inner races still fit snug I'd be inclined to let it ride. If the races are loose, have any gaps, or don't fit right in the slightest then yea I'd chuck that spindle in the trash...
