What did you do to your Ranger today? (Part Deux!)

I put the insurance back on my truck today. Once I wash off the winter's dust I'm going to drive it. I want to pull the dash bezel off and repaint it but that'll be after the ride.

Sealed up the front diff cover yesterday, and probably triggered someone because I used silicone for the cover gasket. When the case is proprietary, there isn't a gasket anyway. My friend got on my case for using RTV and not a gasket, and then I showed him the ford workshop manual which specs RTV anyway. He shut up real quick.

I don’t think I’ve ever bought a diff cover gasket. The last two covers I did I bought a newer RTV specifically for doing it (it also specs that you have to wait like 24 hours before filling with oil). We’ll see how I like it. So far it seems good. Before that Ultra Black RTV was my go-to. Tried using a couple other RTV options but was never really happy with them, they seemed to leak after awhile. Besides, only one time I found a gasket taking one apart (even from the factory they use RTV with no gasket), and that sucked cleaning a gasket that had been smeared with RTV off everything.

Hmmmmm, all you builders and customizers change every single thing Ford has ever done all day long, and then, when you get challenged, the first thing you do is point to the Ford manual? What’s going on with that?

Hey, hey, hey, I never said I went by the manual, that’s pretty obvious, I’m just chuckling at those who use it for a crutch….

Hmmmmm, all you builders and customizers change every single thing Ford has ever done all day long, and then, when you get challenged, the first thing you do is point to the Ford manual? What’s going on with that?

I’m a gasket man myself, but I usually use Permatex on top of the gasket…

When it comes to stuff like torque specs and sealing procedures, I follow the book when I can. More often than not, the guys who built it know best.

Of course, when I modify or upgrade something, that changes. But my truck is nearly all stock right now save for bigger tires and a torsion key crank.

I really don't care if people follow it or not. If I'm working on it, it is for sure easier when the proper procedures have been followed in the past, but that's my preference. When my friend asked for a reason, I gave him the reason. Although I would have used RTV regardless if the manual called for it or not.

I still laugh at Permatex's own video... While the guy talks about applying a small even amount, the video shows him absolutely gobbing it on to the oil pan. The comments are gold too.

Until the ARB covers, I have never used a gasket. The covers came with a gasket. So, I figured why the heck not. If it leaked, I'd pull the cover and RTV it.

I have rolls of gasket paper. I can, and have, made gaskets for things that you can’t buy a gasket for. But I still would RTV a diff cover before I made a gasket for it.

I use the gray Motorcraft silicone, it's way better than most of the other sealers.

I’ve bought a few 8.8 bearing kits that came with cork paper gaskets. Never actually installed one though.

My go to is Ultrablack RTV.
My father always used Red RTV for everything.

I don’t really think it matters, but I don’t really care if stuff leaks. As long as it doesn’t all leak out until the next time I need in.
