What did you do to your Ranger today? (Part Deux!)

Just learned that Pick-n-Pull is my new ‘happy place’. Replaced a crudely repaired glove box on my ‘91 with an almost perfect one from a ‘92 AND pried out a hood support rod clip without completely breaking the flexible tongue.

a miracle.

Soooo, i’m planning on sanding and repainting the black above the yellow line, and I have some stickers/graphics on order for the Missing Linc and the Road Ranger. Probably a dozen things I forgot and a dozen more I still need to do. But here it is. All I get are smiles, and, amazing to me, it is a chick magnet!

I’m still debating whether I’m going to swap out the Ranger steelies for a set of Lincoln turbine wheels. If I use the turbine wheels, I plan on polishing the ribs and painting the spaces in between with the same regal red as the truck.

Now I’m going to sketch up how I did the third axle & “5th wheel” on the Road Ranger as a start for that truck.

And if there are any basketball fans, my son is the assistant coach for Roselle Catholic in New Jersey. They won the New Jersey state championship for non-public schools. The national invitational tournament starts today, and his game is going to be broadcast on ESPNU at 6 PM. My son has been a basketball scout for the inner city and international talent for pre high and high schools, and he now has five players in the NBA. Proud poppa. GO LIONS!!!

that ranger is kewlz :icon_cheers:

Off Foster or over in Sherwood (or I guess there's one over in Vancouver too...)? the one on Foster is where I got the tailgate and front clip for my '97, and the rear slider for my '90... it's in the GHETTO though, I'm not used to that, I've gotten way more parts out of the Sherwood yard (closer to home) but it's been basically empty for a couple years, they finally filled it back up in the last couple weeks from the email I got which is good news...

Foster. The young woman at checkout was very helpful about a couple of things, she told me about a site called Row 52 where you can set up alerts for when specific make model year vehicles come in. Curious to see how well that works, and I did set up an alert. Cheers!

Been tinkering with the green Ranger when I get a few minutes here and there. Started working on replacing the front bumper, need to patch the newly used one and bolt the valence on plus repair the one fog light. Still on the hunt for my frame pieces.

Going to have to take a break from that all soon and do some tree work before things leaf out. Think I want to try and get a knee ascender before I do that though, should make climbing a lot easier having a knee and a foot ascender.

A question from Vegas:

Could somebody educate me a little about alternators? Whenever I needed an alternator, I just got what was recommended for the original vehicle, and then I got the cheapest rebuilt one I could get.

With adding double batteries and all the accessories on these customs I’m doing, I’m thinking I may want to go to a more powerful higher amp alternator. But like usual, I don’t want to spend any money. So my question is, what are the options and how can I spot them in the junkyard?

To help focus any response, I am pretty handy and knowledgeable, and I can take apart and put back together almost anything. So if I got a used one and had to change the brushes or the bearings, that’s not an issue. Pictures would be great. And let me say, I’m looking for very specific advice like “if you get the 1956 Buick roadmaster alternator and you change the right Webelfetzer with a left handed smoke shifter…”

Thanks in advance.

Have you read this or any of the other alternator articles in our tech library? Good place to start.

From my experience, Powermaster stuff is junk, as are many brands of remans. I wouldn't look for the cheapest, I'd look for a familiar brand like Motorcraft or AC Delco if you're shopping Rock Auto or another online vendor. The alternator on my truck came from Napa because I've had good luck with them in the past and my friend works there.

Yesterday I replaced the gaskets behind my Edelbrock water pump, washed 6 months of dust off the truck, and drove it for the first time since November. The 351 has considerably more torque than my 2.0 Ecoboost Escape.

thought about driving it to work but still have to clean the iac and see if that fixes the oddly hunting idle issue.
