On a 2001 ranger 4.0 do I have a EEC-IV or OBD II or something else?

All truck from I think 98 and up are obd2. As for computer, whatever came stock with your engine.

95 and up is OBDII

A few 95 models had OBD II ( counting all car makes ), all starting in 1996. OBD II in a ford is called EEC-V. All are not the same. If you need to replace yours you'll need: The serial number off the computer to get an exact replacement, and then have the computer programmed (flashed) to your truck. If you attempt to run one with the same serial number but not have it flashed you'll have issues.

Hope this helps!

Thanks- I was hoping for self diagnostiic, guess a scanner is in order. Anyone know if the computer re-sets ALL trouble codes by disconnecting the battery- I have a bad egr code, I inspected the valve, it functions with vacuum, I cleaned it anyway, now am double checking vacuum and juice to egr sensor, then I guess I'll buy one.

To recap"

95+ Rangers are OBDII
96+ ALL U.S. cars required to be OBDII

Disconnecting the battery resets the entire computer & codes after 20 minutes.

If you have a P0420, just save yourself the headache, go buy a new DPFE sensor, and get on with your life.

You can't reset an OBD II computer by pulling the battery cable. The code is stored until you clear it with a scanner or reader. The light may go out on the gauge cluster but the problem still exists. You need to get the code read and fix it. It may be something that will get worse or cause other sensors to fail.

What are you talking about?

The Vin of the ECU plays NO role in the functionality of the truck's engine outside of what engine it is. I have run a 96 Explorer V-8 ECU and a pair of 01 Explorer V-8 ECU's in my swapped ranger without any issues relating to the different model of truck AND engine, let alone the individual truck.

Emissions places don't even check ECU VIN's.

He never said anything about a VIN. He said that a NEW OBDII computer needs to be flashed for the engine to run properly. And that is true.

You have used PCMs with the program already in it. Go get yourself a new computer, brand new (or reman) out of the box, never used before. Throw it in and try to start the engine up without flashing it first.

Betcha it doesn't work too well, if it runs at all. Newer ones with PATS won't even crank until you run the installation programming and then program the keys again.

Leaving the battery unhooked for an hour or so will in fact clear out the memory. All of it. Newer ones can go a few days, but will still set a P1000.

ooooooooooooooooooo.

I can't imagine why you would ever buy a new or reman ECU that doesn't already have an OEM program loaded in it...?
