what can I do to speed up internet?

Spybot doesnt delete a file unless you tell it to. If a file you want comes up in a scan, you simply tell spybot its a good file and to ignore it from now on. Pretty simple, but anyway not a big deal.

Do the other things I listed and your computer will be noticeably faster

Faster but unprotected, do nothing he says and follow others advice. I showed this thread to my son who does systems work for the largest online university and he laughed out loud. The college uses AVG, I prefer Avast

Norton, Pandam Mcafee, all fail miserably listen to Southern_Trendkill

Wow there is a lot of misinformation here. First off, we don't really know much about your problem so everything suggested is a stab in the dark. We will need more info to help you troubleshoot correctly. What type of connection do you have? (DSL, Cable, etc). What is the quoted speeds for your tier of service? While they should never be taken very seriously, what does an online speed test report your current speed as for both directions (there are quite a few choices, testmy.net, dslreports, speakeasy, etc)? What is your Internal network setup like (i.e. DSL modem->Wireless router->2 PC's)? Are you running any file sharing programs such as bit torrent, lime wire, etc.?

I bought some of the big 7dBi antennas for my router on ebay and I went from hardly having a trace of a signal to being able to use my internet in the garage despite one of the walls in the way being brick.

talk to me more bout these antennas. do they work on any router? link? thanx

i would recomend using fire fox or google chrome instead of IE, also remove any program that runs in background when u start up.
even printer software does that, for example my hp printer.
as for antivirus i use AVG free and i dont have any problems
this si my new pc and it came with norton antivirus for a 60 day trial. even the salesman tried hard to convinve me to purchase the license for it i didnt.
had to remove norton 4 days after purchasing cuz it wouldnt let firefox, msn or a lot more programs to connect to internet. even it wouldnt allow the modem to connect.
i removed it and installed the free version of AVG and works fine.
if u need to remove any norton product search for the norton removal tool
its a free tool . if u remove it from the control panel it may leave some files in your system and still will be messing your aplications.

is the a flash player for google chrome? I noticed chrome isnt an option on adobe FP site. Also this forumn doesnt work in chrome.

I exclusively use Chrome. Have had ZERO point ZERO issues with it. I do use Fire Fox when I am capturing Youtube video.

I agree with this ...... doing what that other guy suggested we be like bare backing a truck stop hooker in mexico........

My computer's condom is Trend Micro Internet Security ......... its like having your own personal medical team and secret service in one program ....... It runs in the back ground but uses so little resources it might as well be the clock......

unplug your wireless router and let it sit for 5 min ...... (do not reset it), plug your laptop (or which ever box is giving you trouble) right into your internet device.... reset your internet device (I usually just unplug mine for 30 sec) wait for it to be working again.... go here http://www.speedtest.net/ and test your speed then go here and test your latency http://www.pingtest.net/....... hook your wireless router back up, reset your internet devise and do the tests over again.

I have to unplug my wireless router once a week or so..... I'll drop from 20 meg down to under 1 meg if Idon't....... and I have a wireless "N".

if you are running wireless you better secure your network ........ my neighbor used to connect to my network and it really slowed up down.

Is IE8(?) the problem?

Yes. It's crap of the lowest order.

I accidentally d/l IE8 onto my laptop. Slowed the internet to a CRAWL. Biggest POS since Windows Me. Deleted it, reloaded IE7, back to full speed.

I have used SpyBot and McAfee AV for years, never have had a problem. That's with phishing filter and Windows Firewall on, allow no exceptions.
