well i'm ripping out my old exhaust system cause it's old and the muffler is shot. can someone tell me what these things are?

the muffler goes right in front of this piece

i had another piece, but i figured out what it was

what do i need to put back? (or get new ones of) i'm puttin a muffler back on it and the catalytic converter. is there a way i can set it up to get better MPG's? it's an 88, so i dont have to have it pass an emissions test for the north carolina state inspection each year. it just gets a safety equipment check and a tampering inspection

Ok, pic #2 is your cat. Keep it, don't mod it, don't punch it out, don't go buy a "high-flow" cat. The punching it out is both illegal (emissions test or no), and as I learned from experience, doesn't give you any MPG benefits. It will also cause some major running issues if that seal at the back ever starts leaking. You need a certain amount of back pressure in the exhaust system to keep it running right. The stock cat is designed to give you that pressure.

Pic #1 looks like it might be a resonator of some sort. Either that, or some joker put a glass pack in after the factory muffler. Not 100% sure what it is, but its some kind of sound reduction device. Ditch it. I'm running 2-inch ID pipes from the cat back. Sounds good, I think I got 2-ish extra MPG from it. It wasn't huge, but I already needed an exhaust system and I picked the one I did for the duals and the stainless more than the size/MPG gains.

thanks guys, i'm gonna rip out the resonator thing tomorrow and get it ready for a new exhaust and headers

yeah, it's the factory exhaust. my dad bought this b2 in 96 and the guy he got it from bought it brand new in 87. we've only ever had the muffler's changed out. i posted this on another forum, but this is what the inside of the cat look like. time to spend another couple hundred....yay

I think you can get away with 1 cat. I've read on here where some people have done it. I'll try to find it and post it to help you out.

cool, thanks man. i saw your post on my other thread. i'll keep that in mind, but for right now, i think i'm gonna toss the old one back on, get a new muffler and get rid of the resonator thing near the tailpipe.
