What are these and how do they work.

What are these and how do they work. I believe this is bad, because with it unpluged like in the picture, my truck will run fine but if you plug it back up the truck don't want to run.

What are these and how do they work. I believe one of the vacuum lines go to the fuel pressure regulator.
 
okay the first one is your MAP (manifold absolute pressure) sensor. very important in a speed density (not mass airflow) fuel injection system. keep it connected. if it dont run right get another haha

the second one looks like some kind of emissions solenoid valve probably like an evap purge thing or something. shouldnt really matter.
 
the second one has nothing to do with emissions, my 86 has one in the same place and they didn't have evap in 86.

The second pic is emissions related, but looks a bit out of place given that your truck is an 89.

That is an EGR soldenoid. It switches vacuum to the EGR valve that your truck shouldn't have because the 2.9 didn't run EGR from 88 on. Unless it's Cali/CARB emissions.


And all vehicles from the late 70s on have had evap systems. It's been a federal requirement for about as long as cats have. My 78 had evap (or at least it had the carbon canister. The previous owner took some "liberties" with the emissions systems). I've never actually seen a vehicle from 1978 on that didn't have an evap system. Someone stole yours.

EDIT: 1971 saw the first year that all US cars had evap systems.
