What are the differences?

Will a 99 SOHC engine take the place of a 97 OHV engine? If so will I have to swap over the ECU, wiring harness? Will the trans be the same?

Wow 39 views and no one knows anything? FYI, I did do a search before asking this question. Did quite a bit of reading but never found the answer.

Thx for the links Earl but unfortunately none of those are relevant to my needs. After reading here I have found that the only 4.0's that will interchange with the 97 is from 97-00. I found one in a 2000 Explorer but it's a SOHC instead of the OHV. I realize you can make anything work but I don't want a big project, it's my daughter's truck. I just want something that will drop in and fire up. If I have to swap the trans and electrical then so be it but my main concern is if the blocks are the same.

It won't do that, which probably isn't what you wanted to hear.

I have HEARD of someone retrofitting an OHV wiring harness and computer to work on a SOHC engine, but he didn't say it ran well. For your daughters truck you would definately want to swap all the electrical.

I was thinking about doing a similar swap from a 98 explorer and decided that it would be a big experiment on some level.

In this thread a guy claims that the SOHC bellhousing has extra bolt holts, and that a SOHC trans works on an OHV but not the other way around. I think I had read this somewhere else also, when I was doing research for mine.

Why not just find another OHV? How much do you value your time?

Ya I did read that about the guy splicing the harness. I do have a complete truck and can swap everything needed as long as it will fit properly. I don't want to be wasting my time trying to fab up engine mounts and the such. Yes I do value my time and I appreciate your reply very much. Thx.

I'm having a hard time finding the same engine so that's why I picked up this 99 Explorer. I guess I keep looking or try to make this fit. Hmmmm.

Thx again!
