Was I supposed to put sealant on my head bolts? 1996 4.0

No, but you, for sure, need new head bolts each time they are removed

What Ron said. Also, how does this thread title relate to the actual content? It is usually helpful to make your title relate to the purpose of your post.

I've never put "sealant" on head bolts, just always dipped them in a bit of clean oil before dropping them in. I have installed aftermarket head studs in diesels that I had to apply a metallic looking synthetic compound to the threads sent with the studs by the manufacturer, but it still was not sealant...

P.S. If you've got left over bolts, something is wrong...

Head bolts on the Cologne family engines are "single use items"

So head gasket sets either include a set of head-bolds or suggest you buy them in a separate package

are they torque to yield?

Yes, TTY.

They hold better and last better.

If you are old enough you will remember "regular" head bolts breaking, sometimes from overheating but sometimes just one too many heat up cool down cycles
