I have an 89 Ranger with a 2.9L V6 and 4speed w overdrive. I want to replace the engine with a 4 cylinder for mileage and dependability. What 4 cylinder engine(s) will bolt-up and be easy to get running?

Please inform,

None will bolt to the 2.9 tranny. When you go shopping for a 4 cylinder, just go ahead and buy the tranny it's bolted to. 2.3s are plentiful and pretty reliable, easy to work on too!

The Taunus 1.2, 1.3, 1.5, and 1.7L. :D

I did the 2.9 to 2.3 swap and did what CHNFKR suggested...you just need to remove the 2.9 motor mounts and plop in a set for the 2.3...the tranny uses the same crossmember support too...

If you get an M5OD it uses the same clutch line also...

May be slight diffeeences after 92, but they pretty much were the same right up to 98 or 99...

One member (at least) swapped in the newer 2.3 (140 HP)...so you have a few options..
