can i just put any year 4.0L in my 94 ranger or do i need a specific year? i have found a fer from 2000-2001 rangers. could i just swap these in or do i need the harness? or do i have to get like a 94-97? thanx

You WILL need a harness from a 93-94 Ranger to make this as simple of a swap as possible. Simple= Plug and play.

I would personally use a 93 or early 94 4.0 harness as they are usually non EGR, non CPS, but batch fire.

You can use any year 4.0. The problems come with the 95+ trucks. They use a plastic intake, etc. They also use a CPS, and EGR.

Even more of a problem would be that the 98+exhaust ports are a different size than the earlier 4.0's, so a non-egr manifold wouldn't be bolt on.

If you use a 95-97 4.0 then you will need:

1). Wiring Harnesses and PCM
2). Aluminum Intakes (90-94)
3). Fuel Rail and Injectors (93-94)
4). 93-94 Manifolds and Y-pipe (catalyitc convertor too, if you want one)

Plus all of your usual swap items, like radiator, tranny, etc, etc.

BTW, I do have the intakes, fuel injectors, wiring, etc. Basically the har stuff to find. Then you'd just have to square away your exhaust.

I will sell the stuff if the price is right. PM sent.

hey thanx for the info and offer but my ranger is already a 4.0L it just has 265k on it lol. she is tickin and in need of a swap and i dont feel like rebuilding the one i have. more money than i need or want to spend.

i just wanted to know what years i could steal and engine from for it to be easiest. i can swap the intakes as i already have the gaskets for that. so if i get a 98+ i could just swap the intakes and use the exhaust manifolds off of that?

Dude, I totally missed that. Not paying attention.

But, yes, for a good easy swap, 90-97. 98+ will require a bit of exahust mods.

Weird... I swapped mine out for one with less miles at the same mileage, 265K.

And the question to be answered is...
Does your truck have California or Federal Emissions?

There's a sticker under the hood...

If it as Fed emissions a 93-94 Fed 4.0 will bolt right up.
If you got Cali Emmis, only a 94 Cali 4.0 will bolt up.

If it is a Cali set-up, just do like i did and swap everything to the 93 set-up.

Whether the truck is fed or cali emissions doesn't affect the design of the short block.

The only thing emissions will affect on a 4.0 is sensors and exhaust manifolds.

But, obviously the PCM is calibrated differently. (SFI, EGR, and CPS).

Just use a low mileage shortblock (block and heads) and everything else off your engine.

welp i live in mass so i highly doubt it is a cali truck. and i DONT have to pass emissions. 96+ do tho. :)

ok so i guess ill be on the hunt for a motor w/ less miles.

what do you guys think would be an average price for one? and what kind of exhaust "mods" will need to be done on the 98+ 4.0L? would i just need the exhaust manifolds? oh and all the wiring is the same?

oh and could i get one from an explorer too? sry for the newb questions.

im mainly into 5.0L mustangs. the ranger is just my winter vehicle

hey thanx. id be doing it myself im not about to pay anyone to do work on my vehicles only for them to screw it up lol.

but even if it was 95+ and i was only using the long block and the rest from my engine then wouldnt it not matter if its obd-II?

One thing to watch for is that they changed the motor mount style over the years. They added bungs into the block but never removed the old ones.

You can put a 95 block into a 91 but you cant put a 91 block into a 95 (without custom made motor mounts that is).

Once again, 90-94 and 95-97 short blocks can be interchanged. That's the heads and blocks. Now it wouldn't be wise to swap 95-97 heads onto a 90-94 block and try to run them. But as long as you keep the right heads on the right block, you're still golden.

Now, the intakes will swap out. The only thing they changed really was the upper intake, fuel injectors and maybe the fuel rail.

As for exhaust mods for the 98+ manifolds? If your truck doesn't have EGR, then you'd just have to plug the egr ports on the manifold. They should bolt up to your y-pipe.

Why not? I'm running 95TM heads on my 91 block.

Between the 91 and the 95 there is no difference other than the upper intake, 95 being a composite intake, and a few changes to the fuel rail. Still bolts on.

98 was the start of the returnless fuel system so that will be different. But using your existing fuel rail will work just fine.
