So I have a 94 mazda b2300 with the 2.3. I'm looking for another engine but from my understanding the 2.3s past 1995 are different is this true?

Have a look at this:
Ford Ranger 4-Cylinder Engines

All of them except the Duratec are significantly similar. I think I've seen a 2.5 swapped into an older truck but not sure.
Car-Part only shows 93-94 as being direct replacement however.

If a Mod could move this to the engine section I'm sure it'll be more seen there. @85_Ranger4x4 @Curious Hound @Uncle Gump

For easiest swapping without doing anything too complicated I would stick to the '89-94 year range, those will all have the correct crank sensor and everything, there's several iterations of front bracketry and coil mounts in those years but I don't think there's any significant differences that will stop you from swapping parts around.
