So, once upon a time back when I was in college a buddy was going to one of those fire department “sportsman nights” things they do where there’s beer and food and raffles. We took my 89 Bronco II Eddie Bauer that I had bought from a junkyard and was patching up since it was winter and in Erie, PA. My buddy’s Jeep didn’t have working 4x4 and being a soft top, my truck was chosen for our transportation from near Edinboro. If you know anything about the area, (and in case you don’t), that area is part of the land of lake effect snow. They weren’t really calling for any real snow, but, better to be prepared, right?

Anyway, we went to the thing at the fire department, ate a bunch of food, lost some money with the raffles, and consumed an adequate amount of frosty beverage because the thing ran from like 6pm to like 2am. At the end they opened the double doors to throw everyone out and we all discovered that it had turned into a blizzard (mind you, I don’t remember any windows in this fire hall). There was at least 8” on the ground and it was coming down fast. We are in a stock Bronco II and I want to say at the time I may have had half-worn 30” mud tires on it (also from the junkyard, lol). We got on the road we wanted to take back simply because the police cruiser trying to block off that road was floundering in the snow trying to get to the road.

Honestly, I have no idea how much of that road we actually traveled. The snow got a lot deeper as we went and at least one time the mailboxes opened on the wrong side. We were reduced almost immediately to slogging along in 4-low and sometimes busting through drifts higher than the hood. I don’t really remember being scared or worried all that much, we just plowed along with the heater blasting and just taking it easy. There was literally zero traffic, we were the only idiots out there for a like 20 mile trip which at no more than like 10 mph takes awhile. After that I decided that I much prefer driving in the snow when it’s so bad that nobody is out, it’s a lot less stressful when you just have to worry about yourself.
