Im making a big dinner for everyone in my basement tonight...

My dad was a Navy man... He called Chipped Beef with a milk gravy on toast SOS. So that's what I assume is SOS.

I haven’t had SOS in 30+ years, but that’s definitely it.

OK... just wondered. I'm gonna have to find some of that now. I remember what I believe was Armour brand in the glass jar.

No no… not no frozen stuff.

Mom made it from scratch when were kids, she used dried beef from the deli section. Over biscuits... its good stuff. I have never had the military version though.

I have heard some make it with browned hamburger which I think would be kind of bland.

The whole point of SOS is that its one of those meals that can survive on a ship or out in a war zone forever. Chipped beef is basically indestructible so it was common in rations. When you stumble upon a place with some fresh bread and milk, you used your chipped beef to make a "gourmet" meal...

Half my freezer is stouffers. Mac and cheese, pot pies, chipped beef, salisbury steaks... I love stouffers stuff. Sometimes you just want crap... the rest of my freezer is fish or miscellaneous aquatic critters.
