Well...No turning back

Just a quick update...
Yesterday I pulled the 2.9 out and cleaned the whole engine bay out. Today I set the 4.0 in and bolted everything down tight. Im kinda sketchin out about the motor mounts. From what i read I thought you had to drill out something to fit it in, but mine just sat right down with no modifications. Is this right???

I have to cut a new hole for the shift knob to come through. Its about an inch forward from the other one. The Air Force Auto hobby shop is closed tomorrow so Im goin to run down to the salvage yard and get some odds and ends to finish wiring up.

The new transfer case is a electronic shift, so I have to figure a way out to get it working right.

I might just go down to a junk yard and find a 94 exploder to literally take every wire and switch out and just replace everything so I dont have to worry about screwin up.

I had heard that too about the motor mounts, but my 4.0 dropped right down on 'em too. Well, after a bit of shoving and prying it dropped right down. (Used a backhoe as a cherry-picker for the motor).

If you had a manual t-case before, you can put it on an use it instead of trying to wire up the auto t-case, unless you want the auto t-case. To wire up the auto t-case you would need the wiring harness for it, the computer for it, and quite likely the switches for it.

Hmmm... I wonder if I could just wire up a 3 way switch to it...

I have the computer for it but dont you need it anyways because of the ignition not needing a distributer? This is where Im getting real nervous about getting it running...
Another thing.... Will it still run if I dont have the O2 Sensors?

The auto t-cases have their own wiring harness and computer, and I think the switches are also set up with some sort of resistor or something so that you can't use just a regular switch. Besides that, a 3-way switch would not work, you would have to have at least two switches and careful wiring. (Thus why I prefer a manual t-case, even though I'm decent at wiring).

You have to run the 4.0L computer and wiring harness because it has no distributor. A 4.0L computer will plug into a 2.9 harness, but from what I understand, the pins are not in the correct places to make it work. That's what I've been told though, I have been tempted to try it with the 2.9 harness and just see what happens, though I suspect that there is likely to be an issue with the wiring for the distributor in the 2.9 harness.

It should run without o2 sensors... BUT... it will throw the computer into open-loop operation, meaning that it will be the default settings, which will cause poor fuel economy, running too rich or too lean, etc. Functional o2 sensors give the computer feedback so the computer can adjust the air/fuel ratio along with timing to account for conditions.

Does It matter where I put the O2 sensors? The D-bags who took the 4.0 out thought it would be cool to just plasma cut anything that got in the way ie.. Downpipes and whatnot. So I have to use the 2.9 exhaust system and it only has a spot for one O2 sensor....

I kinda want to have the electric tcase so i guess i will be tearing apart the exploder it all came from this afternoon

I'm not sure how many o2's an Explorer ran...

If it's like my Ranger, it's one one for each side of the downpipe (left bank, right bank), and possibly one after the cat.

The wiring harness I got for my 4.0L was off of a Ranger, and it only had for one o2 sensor, IIRC.

So how's the progress on this mess goin?

My 94 Explorer has a O2 sensor on each side (left bank/Right Bank). Nothing behind the cat. And I was nervous also when I started my 302 swap in my Ranger. I was using my buddies auto shop(his business) to do it in. I was praying everything worked, and that it wouldn't be sitting in his shop, in the way for months on end. The worst part was fabbing up the tranny/t-case mounts. But that first time we fired it up, it was music to my ears and knew it wouldn't be long till I drove it out of the shop. Take your time, and everything will work out......
