I got 'em

I got my DJM beams yesterday and at first was very impressed they're massive and the paint is heavy-duty. Then I started lookin closer the paint is hiding a lot of weld splatter... well no one will see them up-close anyway... looked closer and there's weld splatter & PAINT.. this is powder-coat so it's a full coat of PAINT in the LOWER BALL JOINT TAPERS & in the UPPER BALL JOINT BORES!!!! Not a good thing!

Anyone know what kind of solvent will remove the powder-coat? Sanding is not an option on the tapers as it will screw-up the accuracy.

I'm still pumped about getting the parts, just means a little more work, no big deal, I'll just muddle through!!!!

Pat

too bad they didn't clean out the holes-that's part of a quality product. Solvent? A looooong time ago, I bought a pint of automotive-paint removing gel--it doesn't run all over the place & by the time you drink a cup of coffee, the paint just wipes off with a rag. I don't know if they make any for powder-coat. You could use a small dremel-type wire wheel that wouldn't damage the taper or hole sizes.

If you use a paint stripper make sure you tape off the areas you do not want removed. Since Powder Coat IS paint, just applied in a different manner, that should work and not mess with the shape or accuracy.

Let's see, let's see - where's the pics?

I fired off an email to DJM, nothing nasty, just let them know of the problem and asked what solvent to use or if they have a better solution. I'll let you all know the outcome... and pics to follow tonight...if I can find some flash power.

Pat

That is the first time I have heard of that problem with them. Mine did not have anything in the mounts, but it could have been one of those rare cases when one slips through QC. I'd like to see their reply . . . and careful with that flash powder . . . lol

here you go...

Here's a shot of the parts along with the explorer rear and the parts that go with it, repaired, replaced, repainted & ready to be reassembled. I'll finish the assembling the rear rear this weekend and start I'll the PB Blaster treatments, continuing through the week & start the drop next weekend.

all right someone has to tell me how to post a pic. I have a photo bucket account I just can't figure out how to post to here.

I figured it out myself!! Can't teach an old dog new tricks!! BOLDERDASH!!!

Wow that's a lot of new parts there. It cost a bit to, I've got a lot of the same stuff sitting in storage at my parents house. So where did you find the best price on the ball joints?

Pretty soon, well as soon as I can get a shop built. I'll be doing a bit of the same stuff. All new body mount bushings, Dream beams, new front springs, rear sway bar, new radius arm bushings, new leaf spring bushings, new rear springs, Ball joints, tie rods, power steering pump& hoses. Only things I still have to buy are the rear sway bar bushings, springs, ball joints and tie rods. Already bought bushings for the rear bar once but the mounts didn't match the summit racing listings for that vehicle.

Doorgunner: I knew you typing reminded me of someone, well I've finally placed you. I'm sure you've seen The A-Team, 'Howling Mad' Murdock.

Now that is the way to do it, get everything ready, if not new clean up, fix up, repaint and install all at once. She is going to ride so smooth - now I am jealous . . . very nice.

Josh easy on doorgunner we cannot be sure he has taken his meds . . . :icon_rofl: :icon_twisted: :icon_rofl: . . .

So where did you find the best price on the ball joints?

I ordered them from Energy Suspension Parts (energysuspensionparts.com) They're not linked with Energy Suspension but they sell all their products and more. I found there site much less confusing then most others.
