What welding rod should be used , read that they should be low Hydrogen, but not sure which one to use for welding on axle .

6013/7018 would be alright. your not welding on cast so you should be alright with that kinda set up

7018 is your low hydrogen rod....

But it likes CLEAN metal. 6013 is not low hydrogen, but it'll handle minor rust and paint without a hitch. 6011 likes to splatter, but will give good penetration on poorly cleaned metal - deeper penetration and will handle dirtier metal than 6013.

The real question is... why do you want to weld on a spring perch?

i use a MIG welder. but always make sure the metal is clean! grind, sand, and i use starting fluid to remove any oils from the pores in the metal. brake clean doesnt do it, it leaves a residue. i do the same to gasket surfaces when building an engine. you MUST have good ventilation! and no open flames or smoking! the ether in starting fluid will pull any oil from the metal and leave the surface almost sterile. its best to use outside, but if you are in a garage, leave the door open and a fan blowing. hope this helps!

Ya man, all the cool kids just crank down their u bolts and run it:thefinger:
I guess that's what I get for posting when I'm half asleep.....

I was thinking spring hanger instead of perch....

Some guy wrote a thread on Pirate about the hazards of using brake cleaner (or was it carb cleaner) and how toxic the fumes are-

Just weld it on. 6011 with a stick works really well. I kind of prefer it because it doesn't have to be that clean. 7018 needs to be cleaner, takes more amps for the same size rod, but makes a nicer finish. I don't think you need anything but good ol' 6011 for it.

Starting fluid is made to burn. Chlorinated Brake Cleaner is the shit that contains the same chemicals as mustard gas.
