Welding a bit, anyone want something?

You can walk or ride a bike...great exercise. I did that years ago so I could by my first car and a new Kawasaki 250 enduro. I walked to work or rode my bike to save that money to buy something and I never regreted it...it made me a better person. If you want something, you gotta work for it.

I agree. But this dude is going to serve in the military from what I gather. Don't be harsh if Dude picks up some small jobs to get by until then. From your experience from being in the service, I would think you could be compassionate to that. You leave a boy, and come back a man. Let him be a boy for a couple more months.

Being that I am a certified 4G welder I can say without trying to be a d**k that those welds just won't cut it for production. I'd save up money and get a nice welder and learn how to set it all yourself. Also when you weld the only time you should really need to grind a weld all the way down is if you have to lay a plug weld. I wouldn't try and make money this way just because of the welder you have, my certification instructor told me that you won't find anything in a book about a weld being pretty its just that when a weld it the same width of the material you are welding, and consistent (meaning there isn't any undercut or cold-roll) they look pretty. I can tell you right now that your rack may hold but not efficiently. Grinding a weld all the way down takes the strength away, welding is all about penetration and slowing down, good penetration happens when you take your time on a weld.

Buy or use a better welder

Slow down and kind of weave with the welder or do the stop and go method to get your penetration.

Then show us your progress.

A good welder is a welder that can set up their welder, anyone can lay a nice bead through MIG but can they set the machine up if all the dials are turned?

I doubt sitting in the back of your truck puts much stress on the rack. And doing 90 on a bumpy road? Now that's smart. :icon_thumby:
