I went across town tonight with my gf and a friend of mine. We got there fine and it wasn't overheating or anyhting and I havn't had a problem with it overheating at all. THen when I got to her house it was running about 200 but there was a lot of smoke coming from under the truck...exhaust dumps behind cab. I mean a LOT of smoke. I thought some wiring was melting. But it disipated and then I fired it up again and there was a lot of smoke coming from the exhaust. My friend who knows nothing about cars said the exhaust was white...but I can't trust him. There is no leaking from the heads and the coolant level is good. And now it doesn't smoke at all like the normal amount of exhaust (cooled it down for 45 mins). What happened? On the way home it was running 190 like it always does.

Any help is good.

well the temperature of 190 to 200 is a normal temp. White smoke usually indicates burning coolant so keep an eye on its level. Might check the plugs and see if they have white spots or anything. Also if coolant was burning you might smell it. if you do determine its coolant, you might have a head gasket cracked between the cylinder and the coolant passage. Do a compression check on all cylinders. An extremely low compression on a cylinder will def indicate a head gasket crack. Two cylinders low might also indicate a crack in the gasket between cylinders.
good luck

I was thinking the head gasket too... but if it is why would it smoke...then not smoke even though it was a t temp? That's what is stumping me. And it out of both pipes (true dials) so the possibility of both gaskets is pretty low...right? I'll get a better look tommorow. It didn't even look white as burning coolant when it was floating past the street light either. O well I'll get it worked out.

what motor is this, the 305 chevy or the 302? maybe something in the carrb? if its an auto on the chevy they sometime have a vacumn module that goes bad to, that could suck the auto tranny fluid into the engine

No this is the 302....the 305 has been deceased for a while lol. But anyway this morning I went out and it started and I ran it in my driveway to 190and it didn't smoke. Then I drove it to get some metal for bagging it. It didn't smoke on the way there I was checking every time I stopped. Then I shut it off and it sat for about 20 mins. Then it was hard to start and when it finally went there was a puff of smoke...not a huge puff and it just looked like exhaust. Then it was smoking for about 5 minutes but wasn't smoking when I got home. It has a C4 tranny...is there a module on the ford because I have been losing a bit of tranny fluid but can't find a leak. The weirdest part is it just looks like exhaust....its not white or blue and it doesn't flood hardly ever.

Was it smoking from the exhaust, or just under the truck?
May have been a coolant leak at the heater hoses dripping on the exhaust. It doesn't take much to make alot of smoke, and it may not show low in the rad if it sucks up more coolant from the overflow.

My friend from my Ontario Ranger club said this.....any thoughts on it?

I am with the other guy's on this on.. was thanking of a head gasket.. but it not doing it now so can't be that. 1st thang i was thanking OO shit you motor going.... that would so SUCK. but with you loseing trans fluid and can't find a leak.. how long did you drive it lastnight to drop your girl off??? i could have a little hole and the heat made the hole open up just alittle (( happened on a C6 i had only reason iam saying that)) the smoke came form somethang leaking on the exhaust.. but don't under stand way the temp would go up 10 degress that got my scrahing my head....
...put a peice of cardbord under it and run it to see if there is a leak and were it my be at...

i would do what 94STXranger sayed i would just run a compression check in all cylinder JUST to make sure it was not in the motor.... GL

I drove it for about 20 minutes there and 20 mins back with an hour in between when I dropped her off. I pulled all the plugs and they looked perfect (they only have 200 miles on them). I will compression test it later tonight when its not 490 degrees outside. And I am pulling the bed to redo the exhaust so if it does smoke I can get a good look at it. I will check all the tranny lines too as they are right by the passenger exhaust.

white smoke

both pipes

losing xmsn fliud somewhere

engine acting up

rubber diaphram is busted in xmsn vacuum modulator......it happened to me a couple years ago......get a new modulator......it's cheaper than rebuilding the engine LOL

HES SO RIGHT!!! Doorgunner this might sound weird....but you're a good guy! I just figured it out too.

I compression tested it and everything was super right. So I took the tranny vaccuum off the carb and put it to the manifold vaccuum at the back of the intake in the runner for the 8th cylinder. I ran it and it only smoked out the one pipe (same side as manifold vaccuum) and then I pulled the plugs again and...the 8th cylinder plug is caked in tranny fluid!!!!!! I guess I'll go get a new modulator.

Me and you doorgunner.....together forever! hahaha thanks everyone.

doorgunner is da bomb.

(now dg, if we could convert constant back into a chevy guy, maybe the 3 of us could hang) :icon_surprised:
