As the title says, buddy just got a 1990 b2 2.9 auto trans has 89k original miles. All stock except 31x10.5x15 tires on stock rims. In his words it starts doing this at about 35mph stays at 3000rpm and 45mph stays at 4000rpm idles at about 1100 - 1200 rpm. Started three days ago after he went out and did some light off roading and the trans leaked out some fluid but it hasnt done it since but he says he has had to add fluid even after filling it back up. I told him that the engine could be sucking it up through the vaccum tube to the engine from the trans. As for the high idle and spiking of rpm, I'm not sure. Had a buddy day he had the same thing happen on his mustang because the cruise control was going bad and acting up and caused the same thing.

Here's a picture of what it is doing.

trans slipping? maybe
is fluid burnt? filter in trans could be clogged
pull vac line at engine side and see if trans fluid is in it
is engine smoking? it would smoke if burning trans fluid

agree with black demon. sounds like a slipping transmission.

That's what sine off his buddies have suggested it is doing at high speeds and I'm staying to agree.

But what I don't agree with is them saying to find one in a JY and swap it out. We all know how trust worthy an al4d can be leery alone one from a bone yard.

I suggested he convert to a manual, he would be money ahead in the end.

Hell slap a 13B w/ 6 speed in it and away he goes.

On a 2.9....

He's saying drop in a Mazda rotary engine and 6 speed trans. Can't exactly say I agree with that idea, though the 6 speed might be nice.

My brother has a 13B FC that's going to get an LM swap soon. I keep imagining putting it in the Ranger when my engine croaks.

That is exactly what I am saying. What is faster pistons going up and down or a rotor spinning in a circle with 2 explosions? :dunno: I know what I would do. That is just me though.

This is why I don't trust mileage on autos. But does sound like a slipping transmission.

Yep, like a drag queen on ice, you got a slipping tranny

Do the 1990 b2 have vss on the rear axle? He's running two different tire sizes on the rear as I discovered tonight and I'm not sure if this could cause an issue. The smaller size tire is on the driverside, it's a 235 compared to the 31s. I say this because ironically when he had one tire go bad and swap to a smaller size, this problem came up. I saw a video of the speed and tach on the dash and other then running higher rpms, it was shifting normally. At a stop if he hits the gas trek quick, the front does raise up normally like ant other vehicle.
