Weird idle any help?

so i have an 01 ranger edge with the 4.0 in it and i noticed today that if my truck is warm and sits at an idle long enough it starts to rock the motor back and forth more than normal and sounds like it wants to die. It almost sounds like an old muscle car. I have no idea even where to begin with how to fix it. can any one help?
