Weird grindy sound and ticking

My brother's ranger recently started making an intermittent grindy type sound around the passenger side of his engine. Not sure what it is, what do you guys think? Also he was worried about the ticking which you can also hear. I figured the ticking is fine, its just the cam lobes making contact with the top of the valves i figured but maybe im wrong? Odd. Can't really distinguish the grinding from the good ol valve lash tickin. Umm it does this every start all the time? One guess would be that the starter motor gear stuck in the engage position. Perhaps a bearing on a pulley (power steering, AC, alternator. Need a ear scope on there to pin point it a bit more.
