Weird 4wd problem

1998 Ranger 4wd transfer case won't switch to 4hi, no clunk no transfer case motor noise no nothing. Leave 4wd switch in 4hi turn ignition off and then back to on and the transfer case motor switches and everything is fine. Any ideas???
