hi gents. its been a long time. quick question...

had the ranger (2005 3.0 v6 xlt) at the dealership about 6 months ago. they insisted that it needed front brakes. everything was fine and at the time i was broke so i posponed. i figured that the wear indicators would let me know when the pads needed replacement.

anyone yesterday i head some noise from the front brakes.

do these trucks even have wear indicators? its not making any noise today. i dont want to melt the front brakes and rotors so am just concerned if i should stop driving the truck or what.

on other vehicles when the pads wear out there is a wear indicator that start making a noise and becomes progressively annoying as they wear down.

so help me out. do these trucks have wear indicators? what happens if i wait to long to get them replaced? i figured the truck would let me know somehow if the brakes needed replacment before they went complete crap.

thanks!!!!

oh and here's a :icon_pepsi: in advance for any notes! what they heck you can even have a  if you like!

cheers! :icon_cheers:

:shok: :icon_surprised:

No wear indicators on your pads. Best to pull the wheels and have a peak.

Really? that's weird they don't make em like they used to I suppose:dunno:

i spoke with an expert about this today.

he wasn't sure about the wear indicators and said that he likes to bend those out of the way, maybe thats what some did on the truck?

anyway once the pads are worn, eventually they will wear down to the rivits or bolts that hold them in, at which point they will make some very nasty grinding noises upon applicition of the brakes :icon_welder: :icon_hornsup:

I'm skeptical of an "expert" that bends wear indicators back. Especially when most cars nowdays don't have riveted pads and once you hear the metal to metal sound, it's too late. That little tab could save you from buying rotors.

its at the mechanic now getting a full brake front brake job. front rotors, pads, bearings and fluid flush. guess how much?

Glad you checked with an expert :icon_thumby:

I change more than a few of these a week...I work at a dealership.

No wear indicators and bonded pads. Frankly I find wear indicators to be a slip-shod method of checking the breaks at best. They frequently rub and make noise with half the pads left, or conversely miss the rotor and make no noise when there is less than 1/4 of the life left. I bend them, break them, and find them useless to boot.

There is absolutely no replacement for a visual inspection and measurement of the friction material.
