Fan Clutch removal?

My book says to remove turn the nut counter clockwise? Is this correct? Is this facing the engine which would mean lefty loosey righty tighty?

When I'm trying to turn counter clockwise it feels like I'm going to break everything. I'm pulling with enough torque to move the entire engine and it's not breaking loose.

fan is righty loosy, lefty tighty. it's opposite of how it normally is. they are a BITCH to get out most of the time. even when turning it in the correct direction. if you're facing the motor, turn to the right to get it out.

i ended up taking out the water pump with fan still attached, putting that in my vice on my work bench and pulled on it for an hour or so before it finally broke loose. that was after 2 hours of trying to get it out while it was still in the truck. looking back, i should have tried heating it up, that may have helped.

oh and i'm assuming this is on a 2.9, i dont know about a 2.8, but you didnt specify in your original post

1-7/8" wrench and a big hammer.

Or, and more dangerously, set the wrench against part of the truck and bump the engine over.

2.8's are the same, at least they give you some room to work with though.

Thanks guys, my chiltons was saying to loosen it by turning counter clockwise when it should read clockwise.

Have the fan clutch off and now tearing down the heads. I might have cracked heads. First one is off and looks good so maybe it's just the head gasket. Need to go have it magnafluxed.

yeah... be mean to it. what's the worst that can happen right? lol...
are you using a fan clutch tool or just a wrench? pipe? cheater bar.

try to get some pb on it, WITHOUT GETTING IT ON THE BELT..... lol. a little heat maybe?

I'm using a fan clutch set. I've tried the other way before on my F-350 and after beating my hands to death went and got the tool.

I'm going to try and post some pics this week of the work I've been doing. Hope to have the B-2 running Thanksgiving weekend!!!!!

From a certain point of view.

Depends on if you are standing in front of the truck or sitting on the engine.

Gotta watch those guys, they ain't always on top of things. I swear they do most of their stuff as an assembly on a bench and have little concept of what is around said part in the vehicle.

I just used a big wrench on my 2.8 and it worked fine, it had quite a bit of room to work with. What is going on the truck now ('98 Explorer 5.0 belt setup) requires the special tool... which I am trying to beg/borrow/steal off of someone to get the fan off because I don't intend to run a mechanical fan.

If you have an O'reilly they will rent the fan clutch tool to you. I rented mine a year ago and decided to just keep it. I was charged 60$ for the replacement.

He didn't specify in the post, but he did in his profile. It's an 87, there was only 1 engine available in the B2 in 86-90.
