I got two broken bolts trying to replace the water pump.

I would like to know if there is some kit available like the ones for the 289/302.

Thanks for any imput.

I use a reverse drill bit if the bolt has broken off close to the surface, so no way to grip the bolt shaft to remove it.

Use a smaller regular bit to make a center point(starter hole) for the larger reverse drill bit.
reverse drill bit should be smaller than the bolts shaft to avoid damaging threads if possible.

You also need a reversible drill :)

A reverse drill bit cuts when run counter-clockwise, so in most cases the broken bolt will start to unscrew as you drill.
If it doesn't then after you have a long enough hole, insert an "easy out" and see if broken bolt will come out.

Once broken bolt is out you need to clean the threads of the hole, then either install new bolts or re-thread hole with helicoil, or similar product.

There are kits to change the water pump to studs instead of bolts, up to you whether you want to spend the extra money on this.

Screw extractor, as mentioned above:

This is the best way to get it out.

Also, heating the area around it (the block itself) helps too. On heads, I've used them. Then again, the head of the block was off, so I could easily use a propane torch without worrying about electrical connectors or rubber belts.

Also, spray some WD-40 (or better, penetrating oil) where the threads would be. This helps, too.

Good luck.

These sorta things should be readily available anywhere you buy tools - Harbor Freight, Home Depot, even Walmart probably.

I have a stud extractor that I love for things line this. I think it goes as small as 6mm shafts, but it does require a certain amount of the broken bolt to be outside the hole, so it won't work on a bolt that has broken flush with it's threaded hole.

Looks like this:

Thankyou for the helpful explanations.

Where I can find new water pump bolts for the 2.8L? I figure the Ford dealer does not have it anymore.

Hardware store.

NP. Let us know how it goes & urns out.

I will try it this weekend, I will post how it went.

Finally I take out the broken bolts.

I removed the water pump, and aparently the bolts had some thread out (it did not broke flush at the timing cover) so it went far easier.

I put a 6 mm size nut on each bolt, then my buddy welded the nuts to the thread. Maybe the welding heat alone broke the oxide, because now it went out without problem.

I will replace all the bolts. They are 8.8 grade. I figure I cannot use stainless steel bolts instead?

great to hear you got them out. i use these to extract bolt from headers etc..even big jobs all you need is a little sticking out. then find one bolt out that fits it and get a ratchet that fits. and start loosening all ratchet are up and over lefty loose right is tight going up and over like if holding a socket in your hand the ratchet should go counter clock wise or ccw to loosen and clock wise cw to tighten. hope this help you in the long run most of all for ratchet that are not market like crafts men. i know snap on's are marked on off but i always buy craftsmen tools so it work best for me..see link for craftsmen bolt out's. i got them in a 10 pc set this is a small set...

What about this converting to studs? I would like some info ob that if possible.

I got another one...

I removed the upper water neck just to take a look. It is hold with a bolt and a nut/stud. The stud failed.

Which is the reason of having one bolt and one stud?

Can I replace the stud with another bolt?

Yes, you can just use two bolts.
Studs, in this application, are often used when something else will be attached to a location, like a wiring harness, so double nut is used so bolt doesn't have to be removed to remove the "something else".
