So I replaced the head gasket and all is well except the freaking water outlet pipe is leaking again...this stupid thing is what caused this whole mess in the first place. Is there any trick to getting the o-ring to completely seal?

I was thinking I could take the alternator bracket out, install the pipe well, then put the bracket back in. Thoughts?

Thanks,
Jake

Do you mean the thermostat housing is leaking on a 2.3l?

And the "O-ring" is the one around the thermostat?

If so, I would check housing for cracks and flatness.

Outlet pipe off the water pump that goes through the alternator mount to the lower radiator hose.

You often need to use gasket seal to hold the O-ring in place or it will slip out while you are tightening the housing.

He is talking about the lower rad hose on a post 95 engine. You can't put the outlet on first,it has to go thur the bracket.make sure you don't have a crack in the outlet or the water pump.Sometime you can put a little silicone on the oring and that will do it,makes sure it goes in straight. What I did was weld a piece of pipe in the water pump and i just use a rad hose to the water pump with no plastic pipe

outlet pipe is almost brand new, so doubtful there is any leak. does the o-ring have to be in the water pump when you install?

No,the oring goes on the pipe.

if youre having that much trouble, you can put a bead of rtv or equivalent around the tobe about halfway up from the o ring, it will seal as long as its dry, but good luck getting it back apart later.
