My son just got some work done..His 2004 3.something motor was shaking going down the road..

The mechanic changed the wires , plugs and coil pack...
Total bill was 424.00 out the door price..

I checked those parts on here and they were all about 130.00 total..Does 270.00 for labor sound correct?

I'd have done it for a case of beer, but that doesn't really answer his question about shop prices. Adsm08 can probably chime in and tell you what the shop he works at would've charged.

The prices you pay for parts is not the prices they charge you at the shop. They're there to make a profit.

But in either event you can assume 1 hour labor to do the plugs, probably 1.2 for the wires, and maybe .5 for the coil (assuming some overlap, it's probably higher if you do each individually)

That's 2.7 hours of labor, or at $90 an hour, right around $250.

In either event, no the bill was not too high, it was a fair price because it was the agreed upon price to complete the work.

If you came to where I worked, it would have been $89.99 for a diag, $150 for a platinum tune up, $55 for the wires, ~$100 for labor to install those, ~$100 for the coil pack, and probably $50 to install that. So that's about $450.

Yeah that sounds about right... The gouge you on labor fees, I am so glad me and my dad can fix our stuff. I would be flat broke with all of the work we have done to our vehicles.

it maybe a "fair" shop price but high labor costs to put in $100 worth of parts is exactly what motivated me to do it myself and learn more. this site helped alot too.

Appreciate the replies fellows.

Question..I just bought a 2005 Ranger..does it have a coil per spark plug or a coil pack..It's a 4.0
Thanks,
Chuck

i got the same thing done to my exploder, with a 4.0, about 2 years back. it was a tad cheaper than yours, about $375. but we've been going to the same mechanic since the mid 90's and they help us out alot. the spark plugs on the 4.0 are a pain to get out, thats probably where alot of the labor went if your sons truck has a 4.0

I feel like, on most any modern (EFI) engines, changing plugs would take much longer than changing wires. What if you have to take manifolds, air intakes, or other things off to get to the plugs?

My estimate would be 0.25 hours for wires, 1-3 hours for plugs.

I am basing this on my 2.3L, where changing the wires was quite simple, yet getting a socket to the plugs was quite cumbersome.

Yeah I'm not sure what it would be on the 2.3L...but you gotta remember that we do these things day in and day out. We have every tool, every extension, every swivel, that you can imagine...

We don't set the labor times though, it's all industry standard. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.

The bill is fair with the price for labor nowadays!!! The parts are not cheap unless you want to use cheap parts. I only use the best I can get so they will last longer!!!!

Thanks for the plug Topher.

Yeah, if he took it to the dealer 270 for labor on that doesn't actually sound too far off. At least at the last show I was at. We charged $75/hour, so

1 hour Diag: $75
,8 hour coil $60
1.5 plugs and wires $112.50
Tax 6%
Total $262.35

I dunno how taxes are in Florida, or labor rates for that matter, but that is what it would have shown up as on one of my estimate sheets here in PA, give or take a few tenths on the coil.

The thing that you have to consider when you look at labor prices isn't what the parts cost. I can sell you a rear timing chain for a 4.0 SOHC for $50.

I'm gonna charge your $1300 dollars to put it on because I have to pull the engine out.

Yeah, its ok. Live and learn.

Those 3.0s are known for spark issues causing a pretty good vibration.
