Warn hubs

Can someone explain to me the advantage of a locking hub? Beyond having less resistance when unlocked.

Seems like a bad idea all around compared to a live axel setup. Adding more connections in the system then needed is typically a bad idea.

The issue with u-joints is they aren't constant velocity - there are some u-tube views that demonstrate how the outer axle rotates faster/slower by several degrees than the inner one when wheels are turned for corner. This acceleration/deceleration causes vibration and is hard (wears out) on the u-joint.

As it was less expensive to disconnect the hubs than to replace axles after u-joint failure, most OEMs had disconnect hubs.

For Ranger (well anything with less than 5.5" bolt circle for wheels), there really isn't enough space for all the parts. (Heck there isn't enough material to install full time pucks in the 5 x 4.5" hubs).

The "good" Warn hubs were the ones for rear wheel disconnect of Jeeps (to allow flat towing). but they are a rare as hen's teeth these days. I haven't looked at the Yukon ones for replacement of unit bearings in Wranglers - they're too pricey for my blood.
