I need input. I was planning on using a Warn 8274 winch on my new crawler. I knew from the get go that it was big. I did a quick mock up tonight and it seems like it will be an approach angle killer. I can maybe move it upwards some but becomes harder to brace since it mounts from there front.

I’m not totally stuck on using this winch, I would be fine putting it on my car trailer and putting the Badland 12k that’s on the trailer on this rig. I think that would save me at least 6” of front length and be a lot more compact/easy to mount.

The old Warn is just so cool but I feel like I am going to regret using it here.

Thoughts? Talk me on or off the ledge…

That Warn is really cool. Little too cool for a car trailer winch but yeah, that does put a hurting on approach angle. Trailmater is using those for rear winches these days because you have more room back there on pickups and such

Those things are worth too much to put on a trailer...

That's the gold standard in winches, in my opinion. But, I agree it's a killer out in front of that truck. For the number of times I've had to use my winch, I put the emphasis on my approach angle.

Maybe I am better off just selling it and buying another winch for the car trailer. I agree it is way too good for a trailer (but I already own it and have no other use for it...) It's actually a factory Jeep winch and has a Chrysler tag on it. I am sure I could easily get $1000+ for it. It's kinda beat up but works great and "gold standard of winches" is absolutely correct.

I slept on it last night and decided that I am going to use the Badland 12k winch instead unless someone comes up with a really good reason to plug on before 5:00 this evening. The approach angle problem is going to bother me forever.

Just a generic one goes for stupid money, a regular Jeep one if you could find a guy restoring a Wagoneer or the like should pull pretty good money.

People go nuts restoring Warn winches too.

Sort of related, I've been toying with adding a winch to my '90, I have a HFT 12k winch but was thinking their 9500 would be lighter and smaller but on the 5 minutes of looking online nothing but jeep guys that don't know what they are doing is all I found... Speed isn't much of a worry if it's just a gearing difference, figured someone here might know... now that I see how Shran got one wedged in the front bumper area it looks like the 12k isn't as bulky as I pictured in my head...

After using my 8k MileMarker a bit, I’m inclined to go 12k on everything bigger than a quad from here on. Really I’m thinking 12k is going to not be enough for the dump truck. Yeah, with enough line and redirects you can make a small winch do big work, but if the winch is powerful enough that you only have to pull line once… it’s efficient. I find the 8k often needs doubled. A 12k wouldn’t unless the situation is getting serious.

bluetooth the radiator and put it in there.
I just rethought things and might do the opposite, rear winch, I need more rear weight anyway and more front weight would make go fast driving worse... that and there hasn't been a spare tire carrier on the thing since '10... Would be less convenient for looking at what is going on but chances of me doing too sketchy of stuff alone is low...

IIRC at least with the lower tier Badlands there isn't a whole lot of weight difference between the 9500 and 12,000. Not much cost difference either.

I didn't see much reason to go with the 9500 really. :dntknw:

I got the 12k on sale with all the goodies for about the same as 9.5k at regular price. I haven't really strained it yet.

Probably the right choice. As good as the 8274 is, it is hard to package on these newer vehicles due to how little extra room there is. On an older rigs it would be easier to recess into the front end due to how much extra space there is. There's a reason so many people are picking the 12k Badlands. They're cheap, work, and readily available.

Well consider me nuts (it's ok, I do too) cause that's one of my future projects. The F-100 has had an 8274 on a home made bumper for most of my life. IIRC dad got it from his step dad back in the 80s. He also got the truck from his step dad around the same time. I don't recall it ever actually being needed. In the early 90s he replaced the rotted out body with another he found locally, installed a three inch body lift, and built a custom winch bumper to mount the winch. Built out of a couple of 3" conveyor belt rollers, and flat steel plate. After installation it never got wired up, never even had the winch cable reinstalled. He was going to add extra support to make it "strong enough", but never got around to it before parking the truck, never needed to.

Part of the restoration of the truck will be restoring the winch, properly installing it, and making it functional. Not sure if I'm going to properly rebuild and renforce the home made bumper, or if I'm going to get a professionally built one. I want to fix up the ones he built, but not sure I can make them match with the rest of the restoration.

Got one of their 5000 lb units several years ago and mounted it on a receiver hitch that I've used a few times, would work better if I actually wired up the control pack instead of using a battery and jumper cables. I bought one of their 3500 winches on sale to put on my ATV. It worked well when I used it for the first time yesterday. Unfortunately the load was heavier than the ATV, but between it and liberal application of throttle in reverse I moved what needed to be moved.

Aside from the F-100 if I ever need a winch on anything else, it'll be a 12k Badlands.
