I have a B2 2.9 and I also have a parts truck a 85 ranger 2.9. I am going to start here soon on rebuilding the parts engine and the transmission and was wanting to increase its power. I am not a mechanic by any means so I am not sure what I could do to increase the hp. I am not trying to make it a hot rod but because I have the motor and trans already its cheaper for me to do this than by a 4.0 with another trans and another trans case and etc. Well any tips or advice on what I could do to it, as far as like change the cam, bore it out, headers and so on. This is going to be a long process for me so i am in no hurry to overlook anything. I am not interested in doing a 5.0 swap or anything like that. I don't need criticism or any negative feedback just wondering what I can do. I also posted this in the 2.9 forum just figured the more people that seen this thread the more advice I could get. Thanks!

its a LOT cheaper to go the 4.0 route than boring/porting/cam etc etc. And the 4.0 will have more torque (for wheeling), last longer (because its not hot rodded like a 2.9 with mods), and a lot less work is required to transplant it than rebuilding your 2.9.

Either way you slice it, you're gonna be doing some work, and spending some $$$. Might as well do it right.

An 85 would have a 2.8 anyways.

There are a few diehard 2.9ers on here, but most of us would recommend the 4.0 upgrade because they are more available and offer more advantages stock than a 2.9 built up.

In some cases, its actually cheaper to find a parts truck( exp, a n Explore or ranger with a blown A4LD ) for next to nothing. I have under 1500 in my truck. I've found a lot of good parts vehicles, took what I needed and scrapped the rest to lessen the financial burden.

The 4.0's are a great engine. You would not regret it.

Don't double post. It clutters up the forum and doesn't get any more traffic from the people who can actually help you.
