i am wanting to paint my ranger when it warms up. it is a 91 ranger, and i want to paint it satin black. so can you get a decent paint job out of a rattle can or should i use a spray gun. Will it look all blotchy if i use a rattle can.:icon_confused:

If you use a rattle can, well, about 13 rattle cans, the outcome will be blotchy, runny, and rough. Rattle cans have too much overspray, which dries on the new paint as its being applied. Plus your finger will hurt like hell from keeping the valve down on the can. Better results only come through spray guns.

I had great success in painting my bronco 2 with paint from TSC through a gun. Thinned it with naphtha and sprayed it on. It takes a lot of sanding and prep work though. If you're not going to sand it, don't even bother painting it.
Here's a picture of my old Bronco2, it was painted Kubota orange from the one of the cheap($20) green gallon cans of paint.

Saw an ad for Maaco to paint for $200 dollars.Even with a cheap home job by the time you get paint ,cleaners, thinners, sandpaper you'll be close to that assuming you have a air compressor ,sprayer and DA.I know its not a very good paint job but its hard to be better at something than a guy that does it every day.

I've done a decent job or two of rattle can jobs... the trick is ALOT of thin coats... like I'm talking atleast 3 go overs before it actually starts looking truely the color. And also one consistant stroke across a panel. never stop in the middle.

But a spray gun is for sure superior.

if your wanting a good finish on satin black, i highly recommend rustoleum grill paint. its 4 or 5 bucks a can, but ive used it many times and its always looks damn good.

i dont know if you decided against rattle cans but thats what im doing and they do sell a handle that snaps on top of the can so its like a spray gun

my 92 is getting Murdered out next weekend

let me know how that turns out, my grandpa taught me how to do body work and paint many moons ago and it has been so long ago since i have had to mess with it and i have forgot how to do all of it.

It all depends on what kinda of finish you want in the end and budget you have to work with...
If you have a compressor and tools already you are definately better off to buy a gallon of acrylic satin black, it will look nicer, last longer and buy the time you buy enough spray cans to cover the whole truck you are at about the same price. I use Kirker Chassis Black/ Hot Rod black. and for the price you can't beat it. And if you have to buy a spray gun and what not, any excuse to buy tools is a good excuse! You'll more then one use out of them. Any other question feel free to ask or PM me... Good luck :icon_cheers:

either buy, borrow, or rent a compressor and spray it!!! rattle can will look like rattlecan. you can buy a half spray gun from ebay that will give a ok finish . as for the sand and fill of it... on a budget you can use an electric DA sander.
for paint on the cheap i suggest Summmitracing. they have single stage paint for $80 a gallon that looks decent. (see pic)

one last note........... GLOSS BLACK IS the worst color for showing any inperfections.
dents, scratches, runs, it just shows everything.
bottom line is there is no cheap paint jobs anymore but do what you want and good luck with it
