Is there a go to kit off of Amazon or somewhere that has the upper and lower control arms, shocks, and anything else that is recommended to change. Sway bars maybe? New to working on trucks so any suggestions are welcome. I have a 2003 parts truck but would prefer to go new if it's at all price competitive. Like say all in for $500 or so just to get it road worthy. It is fine now but the control arms are shot. If I already have it all apart would now be the time to consider a disk conversion on the rear brakes? Parts list available for that?

There are vendors that sell entire front end kits...

I just don't trust many of the parts that get sold that way. So I just buy individually what I need.

Last front end parts I bought were Moog. Those still aren't what they use to though.

You'll get many opinions on shocks...

I put my truck on KYB MonoMax shocks last time and have been happy. Although I had a front blow out... they replaced it under warranty.

I will be doing mostly normal/rough road driving since PA has terrible roads and I also want to be able to go desert crawling out west. Something that can do both decently would be nice.

Well... I like my KYB shocks. I was a distributor for KYB back when I had my shop... I've had really good luck with them.

You could also consider Bilstiens... its a favorite here on the forums.

Skyjacker also has a faily new offering in a mono tube shock. BlackMax I believe. I'll likely do a set of those when I do shocks on the Bronco II... they offer them in different lengths and its lifted 6 inches.

I had considered a mild lift on mine as well but that seems like more work and tuning to do and it's not exactly like it's dragging the ground right now. There's also the consideration that this is a road trip so I'll be driving PA to SW NM for it.

It's pretty easy to get a little lift out of the SLA trucks.

Turn up the torsion bars a little... it does have its limits though. Good heavy duty rear springs and a 1 inch shackle has mine sitting on 32's.

That looks really good.

Road trip? What does that have to do with it? Just did 3,900 miles in 15 days in August.

The road trip is relevant because I will be going about 2000 miles and I don’t want something so stiff as to make it a horrible drive but I do also want it to be able to not be so soft that I feel like I’m bottoming out every time I hit a little bump in the desert.

I wasn't clear. I was referrimg more to your reluctance to lift it.

I guess I wasn't clear really. It was two different thoughts. First was lifting it was a lot of work. Second was that the choices in general matter because it will do a lot of highway miles but also desert miles.

So you're preparing the truck for an upcoming trip and want to refurbish the suspension as part of it? Lifting is not a target goal?

Biggest reason to lift would be to clear bigger tires. If lifting is not a goal for the trip and you don't need tires right now, I'd forgo that until later. Stock 04 4x4 with decent tires will be plenty capable and still a good ride for a road trip.

I share @Uncle Gump 's opinion of what you will get in one of those component kits. Will likely serve you fine for a 2k mile road trip, but also likely to be worn out at 20k miles where better parts might last 50-100k.

What is your time frame for getting the work done prior to the trip?

If you have a few days (next-day/2-day with Prime) but really need to save money, a kit off Amazon/eBay and be prepared to replace it in a few months/year of hard driving.

If need parts today/tomorrow morning to get it "road worthy" in time, buy from your local auto parts store. Be prepared to pay a little more and stick with name brands, but they can usually have it from the warehouse the next morning at latest. The house brands are little better than what you find on Amazon, but might have a better warranty. That lifetime warranty house brand might sound good, but that doesn;t mean much when you have to replace them two or three times as often as the name brand.

If you can wait a week, buy better parts than either from RockAuto (or go there for part #s and shop around) to save some money. Remember that TRS and/or members get disocunt codes and post them on the forum, so search for a recent one. Only 5% but every little bit helps. If you're lucky you might find some good parts that are on wholesale closeout.

Again I agree with Gump's assessment on Moog, but still likely better than a lot of the budget/economy parts out there. I've never used them, but hear good things about the Mevotech TTX components.

Unless you're planning (or need) for an alignment the big items to replace are lower ball joints, upper control arms, and sway bar end links in front and shocks all a round if needed. I wouldn't worry too much about leaf spring bushings unless they are showing signs of wear/damage, they usually last a LONG time. Many people prefer no sway bar for offroad, and your truck may not even have a rear one, so I wouldn't worry too much about rear end links at this time.

If you are planning for an alignment add tie rod ends and camber adjusters to the list of parts. Alignment shop will probably tell you to replace them whether you actually need them or not, it's an easy sell and upcharge for them doing the work. They're going to need the adjusters for the alignment, and better to install them yourself than pay them to do it.

I'll throw out a vote for Bilsteins, but any of the suggestions would be good. Even the stock replacement Monroe/KYB/Gabriel shocks aren't bad for a driver. If you have to make sacrifices to stay in budget, go higher end on the parts above, and a more budget daily driver quality shock. Easier and cheaper to upgrade the shocks later if desired than have to rebuild the suspension again.

Perhaps personal bias on my part but I would rather get parts from Rock Auto, using the discount codes we post in it's own thread in the general section than get them from amazon. Even on Rock Auto, you kind of have to be discerning but the more popular parts are often tagged with a heart and tend to be parts of a known quality.

Whichever direction you decide to go, stick with name brands and shop around
