Want to build a 4.0

Well, here is to hopefully some good advice. I currently have a 3.0L 99 Ranger XLT, the problem is the 3.0 is fun but not nearly enough power. I recently have found a donor vehicle I believe it's a 92-95 Explorer 4.0 5 speed 4WD. I want to rebuild the 4.0 and just set my body on its frame. Transfer over my lift/tires and such. Question is... Where do I start upgrading the motor. Looking at things like new valves, a new cam, new pistons, crankshaft? Then other parts as in MSD Igniton, cold air intake(have one on my 3.slow) exhaust(full systems), other ideas? Supercharger? My step dad has a Jeep Wrangler with a s/c 4.0, and its a beast in the mud and on the street. :headbang:

That is going to be pretty hard to do.

Also, 92-95 encompasses some massive changes to the Explorer.

A 99 lift won't work on a 91-94 explorer. Won't work on a 95 either.

If you wanna build an engine up, go with a small block. It fits, will yield way more power, and will be cheaper.

My 93 4.0 runs pretty good though... Ported intake, ported and polished heads, worked-over throttle body, headers, Accel coil pack, mustang GT injectors, tricked IAT and O2 sensors. Stock tune, and short block, intake and airbox. It'll take off on a Mustang GT up to 45mph, but I've also got a 5.13 gear behind it, so it takes off quick...

My almost stock 99 5.0 Exploder still has more power. If the Ex wasn't so heavy and Awd it would walk all over it.

As for a body swap onto the Ex chassis, screw that nonsense. Just swap the motor, get the appropriate harnesses and intake and call it done. And to make yours a 4x4 get a Toyota steering box, jeep D30, bolt-on longarm jeep lift kit, and a few other parts, and a little bit of fabrication.

Thats what I was thinking in the beginning but everyone is telling me the 4.0 won't fit in place of my 3.0.

What...? It'll drop right in... Well kinda, you would be way way way better off with a 98-00 OHV 4.0 donor truck. Every thing pertaining to the engine must be swapped from the radiator to the transmission, throttle cable to the y-pipe, and airbox to ecu.

A 5.0 can fit in place of your 3.0. A guy did it to his 98 4wd ranger on here not to long ago.

On problem with that is I found this donor, I know the guy, and he only wants 400 for everything. And, as for the 5.0 I have to build custom mounts because I have coil over front suspension. Let me rephrase my entire question. I have a 99 Ranger 3.0 2WD, I want more power and 4WD. How should I go about this?

Fuel-injected explorer 5.0, 4R70W transmission, Dana 20 with twin stick shifter, Dana 44 SAS, 9" rear.

All with only 4" of lift and 10" wide wheels and 33x12.50 mud tires...

That would be one cocky street/ DD/ weekend wheeler....

Oh and money is currently an issue as of right now. Looking for something temp til this 3.0 dies. It only has 96K though so from what I have read its got a ton of life left in it. and, on the subject of a temp fix. How do I get rid of this one wheel peel rangers are know for? It's got the Ford 7.5" rear and 3.11??? gears.

Weld the spider gears. That's the cheapest way.
