looking to build a ranger mud truck with tons of power. would rather do it with the 4.0l than a V-8 if i can get the power im looking for out of it. i dont have this ranger yet, so i could go with the pre-or post 02 4.0L. being that i would be willing to drop some were in the ball park of $2000 into it to get these power gains. what is the max hp i could get out of ether of these motors?

Blown 4.0 or motor swap. The ONLY real power adders for your vehicle.

i was afraid that was going to be the answer. unfortunalty the rules of the class im looking to compete in dont alow blown motors, or nitrous. if it helps answer the question. out of the 4.0L i would be happy if i could get it up into the hi 300's for HP.

You drop a 4.0 in your B2, and you'll be happy with it. but it sounds like you are competing so I say swap a 5.0 in from a F150 or Explorer. From what I hear, its not that difficult.

yes i am competeing, currently with a 88 B2 with a 2.9L, D35 TTB 4.56 and welded, 7.5 4.56 and welded, 6 inch sup lift, 3in body lift, 35x12.50 DC Crushers up front, and 35X10.50 boggers on the rear. i do quite well for my self, but want to kick everybodys a$$ in my class. The body is in ruff shape, and my axles probably would not hold up to the kind of HP and tires i want to throw at it. so i am thinking about starting over with a new one.

Hear is what im thinking. 2000 ish ranger. using the 4.0L if i can get the HP into the high 300's, or a V-8 if need be. (if i end up going to the V-8 i would expect alot more HP to make up for the added waight) doing an SAS for the front probably a D44, not shure if i would keep the 8.8 or go to a 9", deep gears probably 4.88 or 5.13 and welded. then put 16/35/15 boggers on it. then hopefully with all that power and them fat tires i could skim acrost the top of the mud.
