I just got done rebuilding a 2.3 in a 96 ranger and the timing belt is walking off the pulleys. Any ideas? The timing belt and tensoiner are both new.

When mine was doing that it was because I applied too much tension on the tensioner while tightening it.......then I learned that the tensioner itself is enough pressure by itself on the belt.

Which way is it walking, to the front or to the rear? If the idler pulley bearing is bad, it will allow the bearing to tilt pulling the belt. If it is walking to the rear, did you install the retaining washers behind the cam, an in front of the crank belt gear?shady
The pulley that is on the tensioner. I re-read your post and see that you have already changed it. If the belt guide washers are in place, I would think the problem lies with the tensioner. Clean the back side of the tensioner mount. I use a little grease where the tensioner contacts the block. Let the spring take up tension, then tighten both bolts. Leaving one loose may allow the tensioner to tilt just enough to throw off the alignment. It is walking toward the front of the truck or off of the pulleys. I looked up the idler pulley and all I found was for the serpentine belt. Am I missing something you are talking about?
