Hey guys. I just got a 1986 4X4 single cab Ranger. It has a blown 2.9 in it right now. The plan is to put in a running 2.9 until I can save for a new tranny and a 302. I generally do all the work myself, which I assume everyone on here does, and I have a decent background in mechanic work but I have never worked on a Ranger before. Any tips are much appreciated. Suggestions are always good too.
Thanks everyone.

Welcome to TRS~!

There is a section on this website for engine swaps that I'm sure you will find very useful if you haven't already seen it. The 4.0 replacing the 2.9 has been done a few times...maybe a few thousand times...so you will find any information or a host of helpful people who know what to do...

So...enjoy...use the search engine if you need to find anything quickly...and have fun!

You probably shouldn't listen to Mark, he is starting to lose his mind.

What do you mean starting to? I lost it years ago and had a Canadian 2for1 brain implant...since I didn't have any friends to offer the other brain to, I had them put it in my head...so now I can think two things at the same...and those Blue Jays are hot...shut up...no, you shut up...

Never mind the other voices...

Would it be roughly the same price to put in the 302 as putting in a 2.9 replacement? Eventually I want the 302 but I figured I would have to get a replacement tranny if I wanted to make it work.
