VSS code wont go away!

Hey guys, i need to smog my 1997 Ranger with 4.0 and auto 5 speed offroad racing truck (months ago i needed to actually!) so i can keep it street legal. I currently have a code for the Vehicle Speed Sensor (p0500). I pulled it ouf of the transmission and it look fine. Resistance of 220 ohms at rest. Wiring looks fine. I figure all of this has to be fine anyways because the speedometer on the original gauge cluster works fine when i plug it in under my aluminum dash.
I also wired in the ABS sensor on the axle in case that had anything to do with the VSS code. No help.
I just dont get how the VSS can do both its jobs just fine(truck shifts fine and speedometer works fine) but i have a VSS code as if the VSS isn't working. I thought it was because the instrument cluster was long gone so thats why i plugged it all back in.... but no help.

Any ideas? The engine was swapped in from a 2000, same 4.0 though. Only thing I can think of is if the computer was swapped with it (so a 2000 computer in my 1997) and isn't matching my trucks VSS setup because they changed the speed sensor setup between 97 and 00. Not sure why they would swap the computer with the engine though, as the engine is basically the same exact engine. It appears to be original as far as i can tell (oversrpay and such on it).. so maybe we shall assume its the original computer.
