I've always considered myself as smart with computers. I've built many, I keep the network at my job up and running, host my own website, but this I cannot figure out.

I have two desktop PC's running Vista Home Premium. One is on a wireless card, one is wired. I cannot get them to connect. They both see each other in the network map, but when I try and connect it says there is an error and to contact the network admin.

I've tried changing the firewalls, turning them off, changed the domain names. I even went as far as a trial of network magic which came up and told me there was an error connecting... Magic my butt.

I now have the wireless PC connected via a cable, and still no dice.

What am I missing? The can see each other, but WILL NOT connect.

are you trying to share files between them or what?

are they both running vista?

i had some issues getting two vista laptops to connect over our network, but got it working eventually. of course i'm not at home to figure out what i did then

I am trying to share audio, photos, and most important, the printer!

They both run Vista Home Premium.

I just reinstalled Vista on the wife's PC. Mine's been running this same copy for about 6 months. I am to the point XP is looking good again.

There is something else you have to do with Vista to get it to be network friendly. I still stick by Vista on everything. I never did bother to look up what it is you have to do in Vista to get it to connect to other computers on the network. Just do a Google search for it coz I cannot be bothered right now :p

I don't think Vista Home you can network. I think it is like XP Home editions, you just can't do it unless you have Vista Business (Pro on XP)

youtube videos worked for me.........i know enough to fill a beer bottle about computers lol.

I got it.. It was so retarded on microsofts part I cannot even explain it on here in words. Lets just say, anyone who is a novice user will NEVER EVER figure it out.

Now I'm curious...I've never so much as looked at Vista, but if you've got the fix it may come in handy some day...

???

Apparently after SP1 installs Vista looks for a username/password to connect. I say apparently, because I had it networked before without this new crap I had to implement and it worked...

So in order for it to work I had to do the following.

On the Wife's computer I had to create a new user account with my computer's name and login password. On my computer I had to create a new user account with the wife's login name and password.

As soon as I did this, both computers could instantly see each other and connect without any lag. Is there a way around it? Maybe. I am tired of screwing with it, so that's how it's staying.

Interesting...thanks!

Did you figure that out yourself or did you have to search for others with a similar problem? I usually do the latter and I'm always amazed at what I find...

I thought about it myself, but I typed it into google and saw other people mentioning it before I tried it.

I just couldn't convince myself MS would be so stupid.

you can network with the home editions (both XP and Vista), you just can't connect to a domain.
