I have a 1988 ranger 4x4 2.9L manual transmission I went to the store all was fine when I parked. Spent about 3 hours there came out started my truck an noticed right away that the shifter was shaking very badly. I stop the truck got back in and the shake was gone. But when I jump in it cold the shake is back and once the truck is warm the shake goes away but in 2 and 3 gear I can feel what I will describe as surging in power. Any ideas??? truck has rebuilt engine, tranny new clutch brakes and the list goes on. Mechanic (husband) says drive it I am worried it will break something else he also said carrier bearing maybe???

perhaps. also double check all the mounting bolts for tranny to the engine and transfer case. then double check the bolts for the frame mounts and support beams. make sure everything is nice and tight, torqued to specs. just a thought.

I would start by checking all engine mounts, braces, and bushings. Then move on to the tranny and check its mounts, braces, and bushings. Also check the engine's vacuum lines for any leaks. Could be the engine is running rough and causing the shifter to shake.

anything engine related would give her the shake through all the gears, not necesarily 2 and 3. But the transmission mounts would be my guess. Either that or the synchros, check to make sure hte tranny is not dry, It is a manual but still needs some fluid for cooling and lube etc.

Thank You for the advice we have checked all mounts, oils and the only dirty oil was in the rear end, tranny fluid was good. Both engine and tranny are rebuilds with about 55,000 kms on tranny 65,000 on engine, I was told to let it develop.:) hahaha
I will be back with updates and check for any other advice. Will be looking at synchros also.

Ok I let it develop into the same state, but my husband the mechanic had to drive it one day, next thing you know it was fixed. It was a miss in the engine one of the spark plugs was completely bad replaced it and pow just like new. Thank You everyone for your advice,

My 88 was doing (still does under load sometimes) something similar...but it turned out to be the carb...the shift lever actually moves to the right about two inches under load...doesn't otherwise shake though...and only in first gear...

I think I might have damaged the driver side motor mount though...

Glad you got it sorted out though...

I think it sounds like you have a misfire.

my 00 ranger did it when i swapped in the 2.3, and it turned out the bellhousing bolts loosened up after about 300 miles. before i noticed what it was it got bad, i replaced the mount and saw one of the bellhousing to engine bolts almost ready to come out. so i went to check all of em and they had all worked loose
