Does anyone know where they stamp the VIN on the engine block of a 94 4.0L? I've read it might just be the last few digits.

In the process of pulling engine to swap in one out of a 92 Explorer and a few things on it are leaving me to believe it's been pulled or swapped once before.

Now that I have it out, I still can't find a date code or VIN on engine. Did find some numbers stamped on top of block just behind head. But was 222 222 and next line 1114 11

Still what makes me think it is not original engine. Obvious bolts have signs of wrench marks. Has cord for block heater, but no heater itself. Valve covers are painted black (thought ford painted everything gray). Part of old exhaust manifold gasket in motor mount. Tin cover on passenger side manifold for cold start missing. Finally absolutely no emission stickers (or any stickers) under hood or on engine.

Guess only question is did ford ever paint valve covers black?

Block heaters were never stock.

and through the entire ten year production run the valve covers were
painted that distinctive "Cologne grey" (as opposed to Ford Grey)

OEM block heater.

I can tell now that I have the Engine completly out that the valve covers have been repainted black. Right over the paper stickers. I think the heads have been taken off at least.

As for OEM block heaters. Yes they came with OEM block heaters. My 92 4.0l had one (I ordered it that way) and Just checked my Mothers old 93 Explorer (which they special ordered new). It has one also. The way the cord is attached into wirelooms on the 94 makes me belive it too is OEM. After cleaning the grime off it does have the block heater but the cord had come unattached.

You will find the vin on the drivers side rear of the block just below the head surface and yes it is just a partial vin.Sometimes they are stamped very light and just a thin coat of paint will hide them as well as grime that may have accumulated there.

@stx4.0 Thanks, right where you said

Just last 8 digits, Not all clearly defined but match. So, OE block, but still it has been pulled from truck once before.
