My credo
What's the worst that could happen?
I was notified of this 97 Ranger that just arrived at my local pull yard. It appears to have deer hoof wheels - at least one on the passenger side rear. I believe it is an XLT but NHTSA says XL. It's a 50 mile trip one way soo I'm trying to determine if it's worth the trip. If it's an XLT and if I get there early enough, there's a lot of other stuff I could pull from it.
I thought there was a VIN decoder here, but I am unable to find it. Can someone point me to it or decode this VIN?

I've looked on line and there are a bunch that give limited details and want a subscription. The Federal NHTSA site has limited info. I'm frustrated :icon_confused: ...Happy New Year!

Thanks in advance.

This is my go to. Not sure how useful it really is though.

Edit: Based on what franklin2 posted, the only way to know trim levels would be if you had the assembly line data.

Looking at the picture, it has an XLT badge, for what it's worth.

Yeah, that's what I thought as well I was really interested in the wheels. Usually the yard pulls the fronts and leave the backs. They only post one image so it leaves a lot to question. But from what I can gather the wheels are prolly 14s . If it were a 4by ti would get 15s. A 2.3 auto...meh. Still, XLT trim may have power locks, windows and cruise, in which case there are goodies I can score. I'll keep you posted.

thanks all.

I’ll try to remember to run the VIN through OASIS tomorrow and see what info Ford has.

That '89 looks like it has 15 inch wheels but probably not the deer-hoofed ones.

Just go. Never know what you'll find. I'm considering the same situation today myself.

My yard is 65.5 miles away. Just looked it up. (Pull-A-Part Nashville)

I just ran an OASIS report. All the info I can see from Ford’s site is that it’s a 97 Ranger. That’s strange, I can normally see the entire build sheet. It may be the age and Ford purged some of the older stuff.
