hi i am new to the group thank you for taking me in.. i am in the process of purchasing a 76 short box 4 wheel drive 5 lug.. the engine seems original but i decoded the vin and it comes up as a f150 2whl drive and a 460 4V with a 3/4 ton suspension... is that possible?? thanks

Yes, if the cab has been swapped. Happens all the time. You may pay a little more for tags and insurance if they think it's a heavier truck. Probably not though, most of their VIN stuff doesn't work with the shorter VIN numbers on the old trucks.

Thanks Franklin now would there be a vin on the frame? To match the sticker?

If it was an F250 cab the VIN should of started with "F2" or "F25" IIRC. F150 should be "F15" or "F10" for F100.

F13 doesnt make sense unless my memory is screwed

There was an F100 in 76, which an F150 was higher GVWR then F100, but lower then a 250. Where are you getting it has "3/4 ton" suspension?

An F150 even with higher GVWR then an F100 would still have 5 lug wheels.

The 460 was a factory option on F150's but the 460 never came factory in a 4wd untill 83.

Where are you getting the decoder info from?

My guess is it had a 351M/400 from the factory and someone swapped engines...not cabs.

Ok nevermind.

According to blue oval trucks F13 denotes a code only used in 76 with F150 2wds with 8 lug wheels and 3/4 ton springs. Ive never heard of this combo. Musta been a 76 only thing?

Anyways yes your cab has been swapped.

But that 460 isnt original, or its not a 460

Thanks you all provided a clearer picture… I guess on the VIN decider the F13 stands for 2 wheel drive with 3/4 ton 8 lug suspension and the J would be the 460 hmm they must have swapped the cap because it’s on a short box 4x4 frame

Yeah....actually it coulda just been a door swap

Someone swapped either the cab or the drivers side door. The VIN tag on the door back then wasn’t a true VIN tag, it was what Ford called a warranty tag. The true VIN was stamped into the frame. Most people and government agencies would never put in the effort to search for anything but the door tag, so now a days that’s all that really matters.
It’s been about 45 years since the last of that body style rolled down the assembly line, it stands to reason a few of the have been modified in that time. This sounds like one of them.

Ok going to check out the spot on the frame these short box 4 wheelers are getting harder to find

I wouldnt worry about it regardless.

My 78 F350 had 2 titles...one for a 78 F350 the other for a 79 F150...since tt had a door from the 150

Yeah it don’t matter just want to make sure im titling the right rig.. both are cool if I build one or the other

Youre getting two?

Just use the title that matches the door.

Just one lol these rigs are too expensive now a days… going to see if I can figure out the one on the frame
