Victimized by tire shiners

I’m not a fan of white walls or white lettering, why would I want an entirely white tire?

Modern tires are made from oil not rubber (like from trees)

I shine mine once a year, they are old but so far so good.

I don’t know about any other product but what happens with the WD40 is a chemical reaction between the fish oil and the sun that leaches the oil out of the tire. If I had seen them doing it I would’ve stopped them.

Seriously?

Ive got a small yard cart, I had propped it up on blocks on the tailgate for storage, tires off the ground. Went to get it after a week or two and it had blown a tire, guess the sun heated it up enough that the cheap china rubber couldnt take it and it ripped apart. not sure how old it is but my ‘78 wheel horse had its original front tires, they look real bad but still hold air. I dont think the yard cart is even 10 years old.
Wheel horse pry has tubes in the tire.

There are petroleum products mixed in. But tires are definitely made of rubber.

The carbon black mixed into the rubber is there for other reasons. Not just to color the tires black. There’s a lot of chemistry in tire design.

I've heard silicone works better as a tire shiner and that armor all speeds up the dry rot process.

You want a real giggle...
Back in the "olden" days, before all the tire stuff, the 60's, to shine our tires up before going cruising, we used petroleum jelly to shine em.
Back then tires were made of nylon and rayon compounds, bias ply. Didn't know if the jelly hurt tires, and after driving for a few miles, the jelly attracted and held dirt like glue.
But for awhile they looked really shiny.

When I bought my Jeep, they shined the tires with WD40. Just had the sidewall on one of my tires blow out at 80mph... don’t shine your tires with wd40...
Never knew that was poss. Thanks for the saftyvtip

This was a very clean car and has probably had armour all and other cleaning products used on it for a very long time. So wd40 on the tires coupled with the age (2 years) of the tires and sitting in the sun with penetrating oil on the tires. It was probably a combination of things but according the BF Goodrich you should not shine your tires with wd40

@Grumpaw I've seen the Vaseline trick used at car shows. One guy did his whole truck with it. After about an hour in, he realized what a mistake that was. Pollen and pine seeds were sticking to his truck like flies on poop.

What! No more rubber? There goes safe sex.

That's about how often I do mine. I don't care if they shine, I just want them black.

I just do it for a car show. My gravel road makes them look weird for awhile afterwards.

Basically, me as well. No gravel road here. But yeah, if I know about a car show enough in advance, I'll use something on the tires on my Lightning or Mustang. The Ranger, I use it hard and put it away wet. THe only wash it gets is Mother Nature. After winter is over, I will give it a good wash, mostly to get all the salt and sand off the undersides.

I heard on one of those motor trend shows (chasing classic cars maybe?) that the natural color of rubber is white, not black. I wonder if tires would last any longer if they were white and could reflect uv instead of absorbing it like black does?
If only “mythbusters” still existed.
They learned long ago that using carbon black in rubber gave the rubber much better properties as a tire.
