Vibration when turning

I'm getting a pretty good vibration going on when I turn my wheels. It happens in both directions. I noticed this last night when I left my friends house to go home. It vibrates/shakes worse when you turn sitting still, but there is still a faint vibe/shake if you turn when driving. I looked quickly last night, but didn't dabble in it too much as it was 19 degrees or so outside. everything underneath on the front LOOKED to be in tact, popped the hood and it did appear that some power steering fluid on top of the cap of the resivor, and maybe even looked like some had spilled out. I didn't drive the truck to work today in fear of making the problem worse, but plan to check it out after work in a heated garage. Any leads on what this may be?

By the way, this is on my newer 2001 ranger with the 3.0, not the 95 2.3 that is listed on my bio.

So you are saying even when it is parked, as you turn the wheel the front vibrates the worst? When rolling it there is some but faint?

Like you already thought I would think power steering. I've had power steering, when fluid was on the low side kinda kick in and out in the cold weather in particular and turning the wheel while parked it would feel really jerky.

Exactly. I'm hoping it is just low, or maybe has somehow gotten air in the system. I'm just at a loss as to where the fluid on, around the resivor has come from if that's the case.

Fluid outside it suggests a leak. And yes air in the system.

I've had leak in a hose a couple times over the years.

Have someone turn the wheel from lock to lock with vehicle running while you watch. Be sure to not get tangled in belts or fan. With the pump running and load (from person turning the wheel) this is when pressures are highest and you are more likely to spot a leak. Sometimes they just don't leak unless under load.

I'm new to this forum an don't know how to use it so please help me!!!! I got a 99 2wd ranger all stock I want to know how low I can drop it an still be able to clear 18.5 inch wheels.

Aerated fluid can cause your issue. That would also be consistent with your description of the issue being worse when stoped. Have you flat towed or turned the wheel with the engine off lately? If so just drive it down a straight stretch and it should fix itself.

I would start by finding your way to the main forum menu, finding the 2wd suspension section there, and start a new thread appropriate to your question, instead of posting in an existing thread on a wholly different topic.

Explore a bit and figure out how to navigate the menus. That's the best place to start when learning to use any forum that you are new to.

This is what happened. I moved the truck with the engine off, and did turn the wheel while doing so. This is the ONLY veichle I've ever had trouble doing this, so it just kind of threw me off. With some turning and some drive time, it did go back to normal, I'm just quickly growing tired of the whine. Is there a pump on the market that would eliminate the whine of the power steering? For the love of all things holy someone tell me there is lol.

is the belt loose?

This issue is unique to vehicles with rack and pinion steering. If you never had something with R+P before you would never have encountered it.

As for the whine, while the C3 power steering pump is "noisy" by PS pump standards, if the fluid is full and clean, and the pump is undamaged then you shouldn't be able to hear it, unless you get all the way into the lock.

You may still have air in the system, or you may have a worn out pump.
