My truck has the m5OD and it isn't in very good shape. Hard to shift into second, fourth grinds every time, reverse grinds sometimes. This is after I refilled the transmission with one quart ATF then as much Lucas as it'd take, which did improve it slightly. When I was replacing the transmission fluid, there was a fair amount of metal in the fluid and a whole lot stuck to the magnet. Can this transmission be rebuilt to a near new condition? I honestly don't know what is replaced in a rebuild, so I don't know if the transmission is shot and should just be replaced, or what. If it can in fact be rebuilt to a near new condition, would it be worth the money? Or would I be better off just picking up a used transmission in better shape? I've been wanting to learn how to rebuild a transmission, but won't do it if it won't fix the problem.

You are going to have to pull the tranny either way. Take it to a reputable tranny shop for an estimate. It doesn't take much to open the lid on it and see what's needed. You can make up you mind at that point.

If you know what you are looking for and the casing is not shot you can rebuild it your self but sense you have metal shavings on the magnet it needs to be looked at. If you have the time and the desire to try go ahead and pull it apart get a good manual part numbers for your unit if the gears are good and the bearings are not shot it sounds like syncro rings and bushings just take your time and keep everything real clean gearboxes fasinate me and can be fun but you have to be right in everything you do but it can be done.

It is allways kinna a crap shoot on a rebuild better to rebuild it yourself putting in a used one is pretty much the same make sure it has new seals before you put it together. A good reputable shop that has a good warranty dont hurt spent the extra bucks unless you like to wrench and always put a new clutch, pressure plate, throwout bering, flywheel bushing and slave cylinder while you have it apart. In my opinion if you want new you have to buy new when it comes to trannies. A rebuilt is still a used transmission some work forever some dont the same as anything depends on what day of the week it is produced.
