Hey there, I got some problems with Jersey i wonder if anyone agrees or sees in other states,
I just bought my 2nd 98 ranger. 4-5 moths later, NJ government is telling me to pay taxes on a $4700 truck. WHAT?! I can fight it using repair bills, or getting the seller to sign it. 5months later, i dont have his number, and thnks to the pros at TRS and RPS, i been doing repairs myself. this happend to me on my last ranger too, but i paid it to avoid the fustration but this time I'm fightin back. I paid $800 for it, 3.0L Auto, 4x4 crew cab. but i'm gunna get estimates....needs, ABS sensor i think(?), EGR valve, new fender, healight, bumper, vacuum resevior. bought it after an accident. Need shift linkage tightened,a ball joint on drvr side and shift motor on T-case. I'm gunna get estimates and send picks....Anyone else seeing this letter with any other vehicle???

2nd, and more importantly, Theres not a dam dirt road i can drive on w/out a cop catching me..I'm not near the Pine Barrens so i hit local spots. I dont member who, but when someone cam into a office spot, they gauranteed atleast 2 reserve parks for offroads...they have both been since shut down. There are 4-wheeler groups fightin this and can be found online easily..but i feel like online appeals are almost worthless. By closing the woods, your making it hard to sell dirtbikes and 4x4 vehicles.....your busting up the economy in a small way and wher is this money for the tickets going to? your new hot tub? or is all the damm old pplz here complaing? plz let me know what you think..

p.s. i cant just simply move to a better offroading state to use my truck on dirt,, I'm likely stuck here! lol

they try that with me like 10 years ago just go to dmv with pic\s and tell them that u got it to fix up

Happened to me once, luckily I knew the previous owner and just had him sign the affidavit to avoid any further troubles. Sorry I can't help.

Heh, gov't must be short on money again...

I bought my '95 F-150 back in the spring. Like you said, couple months later I get a thing from the tax office telling me I owe more tax, they said the truck blue booked for $5,600. My response was "Well, if you'll buy the truck from me for $5,600, I'll sell it right this minute!"

The list of stuff that needed/needs fixed on it is longer than my arm, and it's grown the longer I've had the truck. At this point I think that even what I paid was too much. I'll just touch the highlights: clutch, tires, rims (ones on it were horribly rusted), alignment, front shocks, rear springs, rear spring hangers, both gas tanks, tune-up, radiator, rear wheel arch rusted out, radius arm bushings, radius arm brackets, windshield, radio didn't work, front hubs broken...

all you do for he tax thing is go to a shop YOU KNOW and have them "check" your vehicle. tell them to make ure the price for repairs is almost as much as the truck or car.

well shoot, that is jersey for you! that why you pay tax when you register the vehicle. the tax is based on the sale price, not the bluebook value for a mint truck. the gov't is just doin what they do best up there! i would definately get in there with pictures and a estimate of repairs and tell them to STFU and stay there and argur till you get your way..make a scene if you have to, they will take care of you faster that way. i've dealt with jersy dmv before...do whayt you have to and dont take no for an answer!

Making a scene in my local DMV will get you a free ride in a cop car. There is always an officer on duty in there for that specific reason. Honestly, it is so organized now its a pleasure doing your business in there. You're in, you're out, you're happy. (usually)

They said it booked for $5600? Damn, I better put mine back together, sell it and buy another one and pocket about $3500 :D

Move to NH - no sales tax. I registered my $300 2003 Ranger with the wrong signature in the buyer line (tweaked to look like it said my name almost... guy didn't buy the truck but the owner wrote in his name anyway) with no problems whatsoever.

Bought my Dakota for $1000, WA wanted me to pay tax on like $5k, so I told them to shove it and got a signed affidavit from the PO and that was that.

Yea, seriously, when I bought the thing I was also trying to work a deal on a 94 F-250 extended cab 8' bed 4x4 with a 7.3 turbo diesel for $2,400. If I could have flipped the F-150 for $5,600, I could have bought that 94 with money to spare...

Ha, I'm not suprised this is widespread Jersey. I talked to a lady who got the same letter the same day..lol..I WILL try to get estimates and go to DMV. Def not paying the dam taxes lol. It breaks my heart that I have to proove to the state that the one thing I love most in this world is actually a POS!. lol, I dont care for politics and dont want this thread to become one, but is this likely a Corzine Happy Taxes thing? haha idk!!

You don't have a place on the transfer portion of the title where you write in the purchase price?

I've had sort of that problem with RVs. In Indiana the BMV collects the vehicle taxes with your annual renewal, but not the taxes for RVs because that is collected as Personal Property Tax. My county, the poorest in the state, still mails you a mimiographed form where, every year, you fill in what you own. Then they assess the value by, I think, the lottery system. I believe they have a bucket of Monopoly money and thetownship clerk sticks her hand in the bucket, grabs a fistful, counts it, assesses your RV at that amount and repeats the process for the next unlucky schmuck.

Indiana's property tax ineptness is legendary. The state got about 4 years behind in collecting it due to some damn thing or another. It's been so long ago that I forgot what it was about, but the upshot was, we paid our 2006 taxes this year. And so the Casita travel trailer I owned and sold in May of 2006 was on it and I had to disagree with them on the assessed value becaused mosty of the years I owned it we had all agreed it was worth $3,500. They suddenly decided it was worth $5,200, 3 years after it was gone. Next year I get to argue about my departed Winnebago--sold 2 years ago. Then it will be fun when we get to assess my converted schoolbus. I have no idea how that is going to come out.

Now that sounds like fun... I have to wish you the best of luck in dealing with that mess!

FWIW, I live in PA, guess this tax thing is going around everywhere...

On the paperwork I got saying that I owed more on the truck, they said that they would not accept these different forms for proof of the value of the truck and so forth. Of course, they listed the form that is my pink slip and the form that the title transfer office filled out listing that it was being sold below value because it needed work....

What are you guys talking about, title transfers are easy, write a check for $25 to the IL state treasury.
