Vehicle Speed Sensor

I was looking for the VSS on my 97 ranger yesterday and I saw two sensors near the driveshaft. There was another sensor a little closer to the front of the transmission and it was near the top. What is that sensor. I've looked in my haynes manual but it doesn't really tell. I'm trying to figure out which ones to test for my faulty speedometer.
