I have seen that before! about 4-5 years ago some one on bii.org posted some pics of a van they found in a junkyard like that.

They cut one of those apart in this months(well may) issue of petersens 4wheel and offroad. Articles about weight reduction(chop a van down to nothing) but they spend a couple paragraphs talking about the dana v-drive thingy. Apparently they are from the late 70's but no oems really got into it. But you can still get parts for them lol. Thats pretty wild looking though. Too bad no 4low...

I still don't see how that is even remotely practical. I realize it was an awesome and functional attempt at AWD for the time, but still.

I also am not quite sure how it works if there is only one output from the front diffs. Must be LSDs. Chevy would have been using Positrac systems at that point. Expensive setup.
 
Straight spool, no differential in the front pumpkins, and it kept it low for street use, as opposed to the solid axle trucks of the time.
